Gift from new baby?

DD2 is coming in 11 days and I'd like to get DD1 a gift from the new baby to give her once the baby is born. I can't think of any ideas, though. What did you get your older DCs?

DS showed interest in dinosaurs when we were at a dr's office. Then, we happened to be at TRU and DS saw dinos and said he wanted them. I said, well, maybe if he's a good boy his litle sister (to be) would get them for him. I also let him pick out a toy to give the baby.

Then, after the baby was born, DS came to the hospital and they "exchanged" gifts. It was perfect b/c DS was a little confused/overwhelmed seeing me in bed holding a baby, so it was good to have a new toy to distract him.

So long story short, just ask your DD what she wants! Lol.

We got DS a truck that we knew he'd love.

Gift from new baby?

I got her a bunch of stuff. Elmo talking doll. Books. The best thing I got was a personalized coloring book/story with dd1 and dd2s names.

I will say that she had so much more interest in her new little sister. Which is great.

Gift from new baby?

Is the purpose of this to ease the transition of having a new person in the house?

My friend said that the new baby will get all the attention so child #1 will get resentful. But by giving the gift and saying its from the baby, child #1 will be more accepting of the baby.
Is this the idea/thinking behind this?

Baby #2 is due in Feb, but DD is only 18 months old, I don't think she understands "receiving gifts" yet.
So I don't know if saying "This is from the baby" will make any sense to her.
Heck, we have enough trouble getting her to understand "come over here" let along "this gift is from so and so"

DD was 17 months when her little sister was born. We didn't get her a gift from the baby bc of those reasons. She's 20 months now and still doesn't understand the concept of gifts.

Yeah...that's what I was thinking.
Its a good idea for kids who are older...

So did DD get upset with the lesser attention?

Even now...if my wife picks up another kid, DD will come up and try to climb onto my wife.

Re: Gift from new baby?

Thank you for the ideas shared. I should add that DD1 will be 2.5 when the new baby arrives, so she is very aware of what it means to receive a gift from her sister. I think she would love it. She is already excited about her new sister, but we thought she'd appreciate the extra attention that day since DH and I will obviously be busy and I will be in the hospital for several days. If she was much younger, we probably wouldn't do it because she wouldn't understand.

Dd was 2.5 also and we got her a game. The m&d sort and snap set. She loved it and a test later she still talks about how her sister picked it for her. It was also nice to have something we could play together for some 1 on 1 time or she could do by herself if I was busy.

Not so much lesser attention but she does get jealous. Not always. It depends on who is holding the baby. God forbid my husband holds the baby lol.

I had a c section so I couldn't pick up my older daughter for 5 weeks. So if I held the baby, she would cry and beg me to pick her up. That was tough.

Dd will be 3. We are going to get her some princess dresses and accessories to play dress-up with.

Something that will keep your older DC busy and that they can play with independently while you're busy with the baby! Color Wonder Stuff, sticker books, etc. Their own baby doll is a good one too!

Our twins got a big brother shirt, big brother book, and one got a truck and one got a dinosaur (what they each liked) from their little brother in the hospital.

We got my dd a puppy surprise. When she came to the hospital she got it and she was able to see how many puppies it had. The nurses thought it was a great idea too.

Eta dd was exactly 2.5 as well

Gift from new baby?

I may be the odd man out but I don't necessarily like the whole giving a gift from the new baby thing. I don't love the idea for a couple of reasons but mostly Bc I know my DD who is 4 (and prob even my 2yr old son) would for sure understand that the baby was in my belly and did not in fact pick out a gift for her. Why not just give the kid a gift from you for being promoted to a big sister/brother? It doesn't really make sense to me to have the gift be from the baby.

There's a truck my son has been talking about so that may be the gift.
