Sleep training
We are sleep training our 16 month old for the first time. Last night he cried/screamed for 3 hours straight and today he had a hoarse voice. I am worried about what more screaming tonight is going to do. Anyone been thru this with an older child? Can they lose their voice? This is so hard but DH said no more cosleeping so this is our only option

are you just letting him scream for 3 hours or are you doing the ferber method?

This happen to my niece-not from sleep training but from tantrums-- over time she did temporary damage to her voice folds--three hours is too long to let a child scream. There are other options besides the feber method.

There are methods that are considered sleep shaping, which is a more gentler approach.

Maybe start with transitioning him to a crib in your room and then transition him into his own room.
If that's not possible try the sleep shuffle. That worked well for my sister since she did not want to do CIO. Her daughter was over a year and it worked.
I did CIO, but my DS never cried longer than 15 minutes.

We did cio at 16 months. We did no checks bc in past attempts they only made her worse. She cried 40 minutes the first night, 15 the second, and 2 or 3 the third then not at all. 3 hours is too long imo. I would try something different and see if he responds better. The good thing about them being older was I could tell dd "I love you and I will see you in the morning" and i knew she understood me.

Thank you I will look into the sleep shuffle. Tonight he only cried for 15 minutes before going to sleep so I might not need to change anything if this continues to go better, But I appreciate the suggestions!

No problem! I think some fussing at bedtime is normal. My 18 month old DS has been "putting himself to sleep" since he turned a year (no nursing/rocking to sleep) and he usually whines for 1-5 minutes before passing out.

I'd actually try instinction instead. Don't go in, as long as you know the child is safe. It tends to go faster (as in number of days to work). And Ferber, especially with older children, tends to prolong the crying because they get worked up each time you go in and leave again.
