If SO has been camping before I would sit with him and make a gear list and then sit and decide on food that you want to bring.

We go camping, but in the summer. Not sure where you're going, but hope it's not going to be cold.
I'm guessing SO has a tent and hopefully some kind of air mattress so you don't have to worry about that. Although, from experience it's better to use your own air mattress bc once someone moves the other has to and it looses air at night when it gets cold. LOL
How long are you going for and what's the temp going to be like? Will there be electricity on the site? Will there be water?
Obviously crappy clothes. air mattress (for the reason I said above) long jeans, pants, etc tshirt, tank top, sweatshirt (best thing is to layer) sneakers and flip flops hair ties to keep your hair up bc it's not the most attractive look camping hair brush
Ask SO what he has bc it may be enough for you. When we go we get together with the other families and make lists of who's bringing what... we chip in for dinners so one family gets assigned a big dinner for everyone. We do our own breakfast and lunch, which is usually donuts, cereal, bread and cold cuts, fruits, coffee, etc. Lots of snacks, chips, etc. bug spray (my friend makes a peppermint spray, which works awesome) sun screen sunglasses after bite stuff
Ask the other women in the group what they have Grill, cooler, tent, lantern, etc. Again, since this is an annual thing I'm sure they have a lot of stuff and all you really need is clothes and some toiletry stuff.

Re: camping for thanksgiving?? help
we'll be leaving Tuesday night (after work) and returning Sunday night.
SO will be renting an RV because we need to make sure his mom is comfortable (she's elderly and has mobility issues).
i'm trying not to stress out too much about the food because everyone going is MUCH more laid back than i can ever be... but i am not going to spend that many days eating hot dogs and burgers... especially for thanksgiving.
i do know that the family has enough camping gear. i might just buy a dutch oven and a truck load of aluminum foil for cooking.
thanks for the clothing ideas. i was so caught up with food and food prep that i totally forgot that i have to wear clothes during that week.
we're in southern california and will be camping out in the desert, but it does get cold at night.

I camp all year long. Tents for about 8 months, and cabins for the coldest 4 months. Thanksgiving can be extremely cold, so it's better to be prepared for below freezing than to just hope for nice weather. Last year, I was tent camping just before Thanksgiving, and it was quite a bit below freezing.
I'm not a fan of air mattresses, having used many over the years. Even the good ones wind up loosing air overnight. A foam pad is critical, no matter what else you sleep on. Whether you are on an air mattress, cot (my preference), or the ground, you want insulation under you.
Get a "zero bag". It's a sleeping bag designed for 0/32 degrees (freezing). They aren't expensive at Walmart or similar stores. For November, don't bother with the flip flops. Great for summer camping, but even best-case scenario, it's going to be chilly, and two pair of sneakers or sneakers and boots are a better option. Definitely two pair of footwear, though, in case one gets wet.
Lots of layers. As little cotton as possible. Knit/warm hat that you can sleep in, gloves, sweatshirts. The bugs are all gone for the winter, so I wouldn't worry about bug spray for this trip. Definitely in the warmer weather, though. Headlamp. It's a flashlight that straps to your head. All of the features of a flashlight, but it keeps your hands free.
This is assuming Long Island and points West and North of us. If you're heading significantly south, what you should bring could change a lot. Like PP said, find out what everyone else is bringing, because a lot of items are for the whole group, so you won't need to bring certain things.

Sounds like you're pretty prepared. As long as there's paper plates, utensils, aluminum foil, paper towels, etc. When we go it's much more than burgers and hotdogs. We usually prepare before camping... last time on the menu was shrimp scampi and make your own tacos. Everything goes in zip locks or those take and toss Tupperware. Also, check to make sure there's enough seating. We all brought camping chairs with cup holders in it. We leave it around the camp fire. There's always a ton of alcohol. Not just beer, but lots of mixed stuff too. Mornings I am not a big eater and they had a coffee pot. We have electricity at the site and I had to make sure I had my coffeemate. LOL! Other friends did bring cheese, eggs already mixed up and ready for the pan, muffins, bananas, etc RV sounds perfect too! Now you don't have to worry about sleeping in a tent, but make sure there's enough blankets if it gets cold at night. We had games too and the kids all entertained themselves. There were a lot and it was nice they weren't on their IPad or watching TV for a few days. It'll be a lot of fun! Enjoy and don't stress. Make sure there's some kind of First Aid kit and don't forget a flashlight too. Gets pitch black at night.

camping for thanksgiving?? help
I was never a camper before I met DH. And I refuse to camp in a tent- we rent a cabin or RV. But, they come with nothing! Think of things like foil, ziplocks, disposable aluminum trays, dish soap/sponges, papergoods, garbage bags, can/bottle opener, etc. We do more than just burgers & dogs. I make pasta salad, bring corn for roasting on the fire, other veggies for roasting are good too. Pre-marinate any meats in ziplocks. Breakfast- we do eggs, Bacon & toast on our grill-to-go, which has a griddle side. Coffee pot0 make sure not to forget coffee& filters. We bring different kinds of kebobs and sausage. coolers for drinks- beers, wines, etc. Red Solo cups! A radio. Sheets/towels/pillows. Camp chairs are a MUST. clothes that can be layered. toilettries. (just trying to remember all the things I packed for our week of camping this summer)
