Siblings and birthdays

My twins are turning 1 soon and we're having a big party. DS is 5 1/2 - what can I do to make sure he feels included? He's helped me pick out decorations, etc. We read a book. I was thinking to make him a crown to wear - Big Brother crown - is that lame?
I told him he could help open their presents and he's helping bake. Other thoughts?

I wouldn't bother with the crown - I think you are doing a good job at including him.

He can also help them blow out the candles on the cake.

Re: Siblings and birthdays

I never really did anything like that -
Their birthdays are their own, separate special days.

I think it's nice to include him to help you prepare to do something nice for his siblings, but that day is about them, I think at 5.5 he's old enough to understand. I personally wouldn't make him a crown or anything for that day -

I agree with this. DS second birthday is coming. I am sure DD who is 4.5 will feel a little left out that she got no presents and he did but she will just have to get over it ( I of course will say it in a nice way Chat Icon ) she will have a her special day too!

Family brings a small present for the sibling.
ITA that at 5, he should be ok with processing the fact it is someone else's birthday.

I wouldn't do a crown. I would let him invite 1 friend of his own, though, so he has someone to play with.

ITA. My boys are 2 years apart and they just love the fact that there's a party going on. DS1 loves attention and DS2 is much more shy about it even though he's more of the comedian in the family. DS2 lets DS1 take the attention anyway. They are old enough to understand that they have their own special bday and when it's their turn it will be all about them. Even with gifts, but my boys share the toys anyway so they both get excited for gifts even if it's for the other brother.

Siblings and birthdays

I wouldn't do a crown. I agree he should be able to process its his siblings birthday and its their special day. The same way he has a special day.

Ive seen people do a t shirt. Ive seen birthday boys brother or birthday girls brother. OR just a t shirt that says big brother.
OR
Ive seen whateva the theme is lets say sesame street: the whole fam wheres a t shirt of a character. And the birthday child has an extra special tshirt with either their name and age...

Definitely no crown. He is 5yo. He should be able to understand that it is someone else's birthday.

Are many of the kids older? Maybe let him help pick out and prep favors?

Re: Siblings and birthdays

While many may feel that bc he is 5 he should be ok with and understand that it's his siblings birthday, I disagree. If it's a big party, and for twins, he may have feelings of jealousy surface or resurface and it would be nice if he were made to feel special and included in some way. He may begin to feel a lot more jealousy in the coming months as the twins get into more things and interact more with you and with others.

I would get him a special shirt or something that would make him stand out just a little bit. And I would buy him a small present. Have him help you in any way you can think of, even if just in having him help you pick things out, or choose between two things, and then when you give him the gift, tell its to thank him for his hard work with the party and for being such a great big brother throughout the year.

He's only 5 years old and at this age they can experience some big emotions that they can't always put into words. I think people forget that a 5 year old is still a small child and accommodations should be made to account for that.

I agree, he can help decorate. He should be able to feel good doing something that makes it special for his siblings.
