Does anyone live in Raleigh area?

Just wondering what it's like! Cary, apex, or wake forest! Am I missing any other nice areas? What line of work are you in?

Does anyone live in Raleigh area?

If I ever leave NY, Cary is one of my top contenders. Would love to hear more about it too

Me too! It looks very pricy there for NC! I have heard good things though.

Re: Does anyone live in Raleigh area?

I live in Cary and have for 7 years. My kids are in 1st grade and they were born here. Very family friendly, schools are great. City is small(its no NYC) but if you live a suburban lifestyle your life wouldnt change much! What else do you want to know?

Thanks! Which subdivisions would you recommend? The prices vary so much! We also like APex and Wake Forest. Are they very similar? Love love love the Bella Casa area of Apex! We are in the VERY prelim stages of research!

Re: Does anyone live in Raleigh area?

We looked into it in the winter. Here was my take on it.

Raleigh its self as a city, is very suburban. It doesn't have a manhattan city feel, not that we were looking for that, but what we noticed.
We looked into Wake Forest and N. Raleigh. I preferred N. Raleigh right outside the city limits.
Wake Forest had nice houses but I felt like it was far from stuff and I didn't like that it was only one main route in and out of town. After speaking to people from the area it could take about 40 minutes to get to the RTP area.
The other thing was I live in a suburban area now that isn't congested. I felt like I would be making a lateral move because my area isn't congested like Long Island, if that makes sense and I wouldn't be getting a house for $250K like you see on House Hunters.
The school district is good, but it keeps getting re-zoned because of the increase in population. The school closest to you isn't necessarily the one you would go to if it is capped out. There are some pockets that don't have good elementary schools.
I also fell in love with Apex, but we didn't have time to actually look. We also have family in that area.

I have friends that moved to WaxHaw and are in the Weddington School district and they LOVE it. I have a HS friend who had to move OOS from Durham but her parents moved to Waxhaw and she loves it there so much more.

I think you need to make a few trips down and check out the different areas and see how you like it. The people are so pleasant, but for what we wanted we were looking at houses in $500-$600 and the only savings was tax. We also did not want to be party of a community. What they call a neighborhood is very different than what we call a neighborhood. An example would be calling Biltmore Shores in Massapequa a Neighborhood.

Thanks! I am getting more turned off by the Raleigh area due to crowding, etc! I have visited Charlotte and I am familiar with those areas so that is good to hear! Thanks

I didn't feel like Raleigh was actually crowded but I did hear that Apex and Cary is. Holly Springs has beautiful homes too but I felt it was to close to the nuclear power plant that is active.

If I had to compare the raleigh area to long island it would be more Suffolk.

Re: Does anyone live in Raleigh area?

I looked awhile ago and thought it was a nice area but loved the Charlotte area much more. I see how much more expensive homes are now than when we looked a few years.back.

Also I have family that just moved there last month and have experienced a few problems already - their son is in an excellent high school but has to be at bus stop at 630 am and the daughter wasn't guaranteed a school so she was put in a school that was year round while son is in school with summers off. Both schools are at .least 20 min away. Also at lot of landscapers and services etc aren't taking new customers , a lot of the people they met in their development have been laid off from their jobs. There has also been a lot of traffic - Dealing with the school system has been the most stressful for them.

Do you know exactly where? This is very concerning reg the schools. If my husband thinks he will have to mow the lawn, he will change his mind!!!!

I forgot to mention this about the schools too. The school district is Wake County and you can look it up. When we looked, our agent mention that we needed to make sure that the schools we choose were all on the same "track" if I selected at year round school. I think it does tell you somewhere on the district site what are traditional schools and year round.
I also found out a lot of information on City-data and I learned how to read a map Chat Icon, that is how I figured out where stuff was and what was going on in the town on a daily basis. I wanted to see what locals were complaining about.

Our best friends live in Indian Trial (15 min from Charlotte). You want to be in the Union County school district (It's much better than Mecklenberg). They live in the Holly Park Subdivision, which is right next to Brandon Oaks Subdivision. They are a 5 minute walk to the middle school and high school. There are tons of families there. My friend hates some of the rules there, such as not being allowed to have an above ground pool (must be built in) and they want everyone to have the same kind of black mailbox. There are other restrictions too, but I just can't think.

Also, as a pp mentioned, Waxhaw is a great area with an excellent school district as well. We have friends that live there too. If you have any more questions, please FM me.

You can also check the city-data.com website under Charlotte. It gives lots of great and useful information. Good Luck.

Re: Does anyone live in Raleigh area?

To respond to a few things here. Traffic is bad because there is a huge influx of people but nowhere near LI traffic. Charlotte is just as if not more congested so comparing the two on traffic is really not a good idea. The schools can be a concern. Due to growth they have had to create year round and traditional schools and have some overcrowding. My children were slated to go to a different school and I appplied for a transfer which I got and they now have all through 5th grade if we stay in this area(we are consideringa move to Chapel Hill) Wake Forest is "country" however you can probably get more for your money up there. I love Apex-small town feel, little village and great schools.
Bella Casa is definitely a popular neighborhood and they are still building there
