Summer Camp Tipping Prohibited

My son went to summer camp the past 8 weeks (today is last day). The director said tipping is NOT NECESSARY when I asked. He suggested donuts/bagels may be appreciated.

But I still want to give a small amount GC to 2 counselors that my son liked. Has someone ever given a GC/tip even when it is not expected? I am guess it is prohibited so I want to know how it will be perceived if I did it.

Thanks for feedback.

IMHO, "Not Necessary" doesn't not equal "Prohibited." I'd probably send bagels, etc. with an extra 20 or so for his direct counselors.

I agree with this.

I agree.... The director has to say it is not necessary. I would not do good and instead give cash (or a gift card). I have no idea with the amounts because I was a counselor a long time ago but I want to say that I received at least $20 a kid.

I would tip. As others posted, "not necessary" and "prohibited" are very different. When I worked at a camp, everyone was told to say tipping is not necessary...we HAD to say that. But let's be honest, we all expected it.

I would skip the bagels and just tip the counselors. for 8 weeks, I would probably do $25 or so...but it depends how old your son is, how many counselors he has etc.

Please give me an idea how I should do this - there are different counselors per week (3 at a time). Only 3 have repeated assignments based on my calendar list. There are 14 names, not sure all of them are still working there with other groups maybe some moved on.

Should I just ask a list of names from the director or give to the 3 that are assigned this week?

Or I can also chat with one of the counselors and ask for a list of names.

He was actually there for 7 weeks, he's 6 years old.

Its not prohibited, in fact, that is MOST of the money that counselors I know actually make. They are often paid the same as a waiter or waitress would be.

My daycare always says gifts are not necessary during the holidays. I always gift as they are taking care of.my kid and they make crap money.

oh my goodness - that is a lot of staff!
I take back my previous comment...bring in breakfast/donuts/snacks of some sort for everyone.

Tip the 3 that have had repeat assignments with your lo. or just ask the director for more info on who was with your child most

Re: Summer Camp Tipping Prohibited

Like others have said, there's a big difference between not necessary and prohibited. Not necessary means do what you feel comfortable with. Prohibited means they can get fired/in trouble for accepting tips. And I do know certain camps that this is the case.

My DH works at a "non tipping" camp where tips are included. He still gets tips and we tip my DS's counselors. Just be discreet like you would ordinarily. Write a note on a note card and put the money inside. No one knows if they're just notes or tips.

I don't think I'd tip 14 people though. Maybe just head counselors or people your child was fond of.

You are all very helpful, thanks a lot!

I am giving to 5 counselors that my son remembers and will put in an envelope to be discreet.
