Allowance
At what age did you start giving weekly allowance? What chores were required to earn the allowance? And how much weekly?

We started my DS at 5, and my DD at 4. They had to make their bed, put dirty clothes in the hamper, set the table, help clear their plates after meals, my DS would "help" my DH mow the lawn, and DD had to get the mail. This was in addition to cleaning up toys in any room they played in, and if they didn't pick up there toys they were deducted pay. They get $3 a week, and they can earn more by doing other things they don't have to do, like helping fold laundry, putting their clothes away, vacuuming etc.
The majority of the time, they only do the regular chores, unless they want to buy things lol, my son wanted a Pokemon energy pack, and ended up making $11 this week because he did everything I could think a 6 yo could do lol.

I am of the no allowance camp for regular chores like making your bed, clearing the table, or helping with laundry. Extra chores do get some money though. I feel that we are all part of the family and we are all expected to do things as part of the family. There is no one right way to do things though.

I feel that we are all part of the family and we are all expected to do things as part of the family. There is no one right way to do things though.
While I agree with you, I've started giving allowance so that my kids understand the value of work. They've been expecting toys for no reason and I implemented chores to do in order t earn money for the things they want. I just wanted to see what others were expecting in return for the money earned.

ah, ok,we went through this too. What I explained to my kids was that although we can afford to buy toys, that it is not a daily or weekly event. We had discussions on the value of a dollar. Why we should save, why we should spend. How to make appropriate decisions on savings and spending. What to do with discretionary money. When, how, and why we donate our money, our time, and items. Toys in our house are received for birthdays, holidays, vacation (within limits of spending money), and report cards. If you do extra work beyond what is expected of you sometimes you can earn things to.
For example, if we are on vacation, they do get a pre determined amount of spending money. They have to decide how to spend it. Once they are done that is it. They can choose to bring some home and spend it elsewhere too.

Agreed the basics are expected. Plus I can't really afford allowance! A few $ a week for each kid which is what I could afford does not get them that excited to do more!

I totally agree. To me, every day chores are just expected as being part of the family and helping to run the house. My DD loves getting the mail and newspaper from the driveway. I'm not putting a monetary value to that.
