Tile that looks like wood?

Do any of you have this in your home? I've seen it quite a bit on HGTV but I'd love to know how it looks in person. We had hardwoods installed 3-4 years ago but they were put down directly on concrete without a subfloor and now they've buckled, there are gaping holes, etc. They look horrible. We'll have to scrap all of the floors and relay something, and I think tile may be the way to go. Would love to know how this is to clean, how it feels underfoot, how the grout looks, etc. Also, if you have someone that put it down and did a great job I'd love a recommendation.

We installed this in our basement. They have the tiles at home depot and lowes if you want to see them in person.
Same to clean as ceramic tile - feels like tile under your feet.. colder then wood.

Can't help with installation info since DH did it himself.

Tile that looks like wood?

My parents put down a "floating floor" and it has a wood grain look.

I actually took what they had leftover and use in for my studio. I love it. Fairly easy to put down, my dad and DH put their whole kitchen in in a day.

We used it in one of our bathrooms. I have pics in an album. I love it - will consider it when we do our kitchen. DH installed it, so can't offer any help there.

You might want to look into vinyl plank flooring as well.

A couple of my neighbors have the wood look tile in the basements/lower levels, but I'm not a fan of the sound it makes when you walk on it with shoes or the cold feel (which can be solved with radiant heat).

My DH installs wood floors for a living and he raves about laminate flooring.

ETA: But he doesn't really do private residences- mostly corporate and large scale apartments in the city. Chat Icon

Re: Tile that looks like wood?

Ty for the input! Its about 850 sq feet of flooring, so I don't think we can do it ourselves :/ But I'm glad to see so many people really like it. I'm going to go to home depot this weekend and pick up a few samples.

We have it in our bathroom and I love it!!! It's looks awesome. I don't know who did ours since it was a subcontractor and I don't remember his name.

Re: Tile that looks like wood?

Just be aware, if you're putting tile on a slab it could be VERY cold. We have ceramic tiles in our mudroom (we're on a slab) and it's ICE COLD in the winter, I can't even walk on it without socks/shoes.

I can't believe they didn't do some type of subfloor when they installed your hardwood!!! We put a moisture barrier underlayment down and then we installed a floating engineered hardwood floor on top. It's been 10 yrs and it's in perfect condition. I was nervous doing wood on a slab but so far, so good. That's too bad yours didn't hold up, that is so frustrating after spending all of that money.

I've seen the tile that looks like wood, some are really nice!! I like them!! Good luck with whatever you choose. Chat Icon

Re: Tile that looks like wood?

We have it in our den, dining room and kitchen - which is the majority of our (open floor plan) main floor. It's on a slab with radiant heating. Just put it in last year when we did a major remodel.

Love the look….I wanted wood floors in the den and dining room, but didn't want them in the kitchen. Since the spaces all flow so naturally, I didn't want to break it up by using different flooring for each room….this was the perfect solution for us.

ETA - I should add - this tile is awesome in tolerating dirt. With two big dogs, a messy DH and a 4-year old, it masks dog hair and dirt wonderfully. I do vacuum almost daily (thanks to the dog hair) - - - but am thrilled with how easily it cleans up.

I have the vinyl tile that looks like wood in my basement- its like vinyl planks. It was laid directly on the concrete. The tiles have lifted horribly from humidity- and they're only 2 years old. We have no idea why the previous owners did this. They're also freezing in the winter.

When we were looking for tiles we went to a place (that's now out of business) but in the middle of their store was a large square of gorgeous rustic looking hardwood floor. And I asked the lady why there was a patch of hardwood in a tile shop and she smiled and said it was also tile

Totally fooled me. And she said it had fooled almost all the customers that had walked in to the store

What's wrong with it? I'm asking because we are considering the porcelain wood-look for our kitchen.

That's the OP - I think she's referring to her current floor that she wants to replace.

I don't have the wood look (yet!) - I have WOOD. On CONCRETE. Never ever put wood directly on concrete!! It buckles and pieces just pop right off and warp, like these pics (if they post) - I took these a few months ago... its even worse now (it gets bad every summer, but this is the worst by far) and now I have little wood mountains all over my house. Its pretty dangerous - I've fallen over them more than once.

I'm looking to pull all of this wood flooring up (I have no choice - its not repairable and the manufacturer told me that the warranty is void b/c it was laid w/out a vapor barrier or subfloor) so I am looking to replace my current wood floor w/the wood look.

Re: Tile that looks like wood?

I've seen the wood-look tiles in various showrooms and in a few people's houses and I think it looks really nice and holds up well. Family friends down the street for us had flooding issues and ripped up their hardwood and replaced it with those tiles and are very happy with it. We would have strongly considered it for our kitchen if we didn't have an open floorplan and the area wasn't already hardwood in the surrounding rooms. I think it looks nice by itself but I don't like the way it looks if it's next to a room that is real hardwood. And you know how I feel about your floor.
