Fever- when do you bring child to hospital?

Not sure what to do- my son who is 2 years old has had fever ranging from 102-104 for the past day. We have been giving him tylenol every 4 hours and the 1 times we gave him motrin, he vomited right after. Ive taken him to the dr who says to keep giving him medicine.

Am wondering should we go to the hospital? Is there a certain point when that would be necessary. Pediatrician says its just a virus.

Keep him hydrated and continue to give Tylenol. Chances are if you go to the ER they will do the same.

Over 104 consistently without breaking even with meds.

ETA: I probably wouldn't go the er though. Either her ped or pm pediatrics.

They can't do anything different for you at the ER.
If it's a virus it has to run it's course.

DD had 104 last week when they took it at PM Peds. They gave her motrin and told us to piggy back it with Tylenol if it didn't come down.

It came down, but kept spiking back up every time the Motrin wore off.

It was like this for several days.

She had an ear infection which they gave antibiotics for and probably some kind of virus since her throat was very red but strep tests (both) were negative.

I would say unless it's at 105, I wouldn't sit in an ER for hours and pick up even more germs.
And even then I'd aim for PM peds over an ER any day.

Also- with Motrin, always give with some food- even a few crackers. Motrins WILL irritate the stomach- hence why he vomited it up.

Tyelnol is more gentle on the stomach

I would not go to the ER for a day long fever in that range. That's actually not extreme for a 2 year old. If it persists for 4 days or so, or if there's other issues, like not drinking enough, becoming dehydrated, wheezing, that's when I'd seek treatment.

Thanks guys... I was literally freaking out over what to do. Hes never had fever this high so i was extremely worried. I feel a lot better reading the responses...

Like the pp said, I'd just keep piggy backing the meds. If he won't drink anything or can't hold down fluids then I'd bring him to the dr.

102-104 if comes down with meds is no big deal. Keep him hydrated(ice pops, pedialyte etc)

Always call the pediatrician 1st and let them guide you.

my DS ran high fevers...105...when he was a baby. my ped didn't want me taking him out of the house. i piggybacked tylenol and motrin and also wrapped him in a lukewarm wet bath towel. never put them in a bath at that temperature. the towel would always bring down the temperature

My 2 year old DS went through this last month. 104.5 fever would not break even with piggy backing Tylenol and Motrin. I called our ped (we were there earlier in the day) and she said a tepid bath (slightly cool but not cold) a cool wash cloth under the arm pits, fluids (whatever he wanted at that point since he wasn't drinking). We wound up giving him like 5 or 6 ice pops at a time because he literally fought us about drinking anything, keep him in a t shirt and diaper and to keep piggy backing Tylenol and Motrin. If after doing all this his fever still didn't go down at all to go to the ER. After the bath, wash cloth and ice pops his fever went down almost immediately. This lasted about 2 days then he was fine.
