Counting Change
I guess this is a dying art?
I just grabbed some lunch and the total was $10.70. I only had 2 $10 bills on me. I tried to dig up 70 cents but no luck!
So I apologize and hand the young girl the 2 $10 bills.
She enters it in the register, and I see the change come up on the display - $9.30.
But something must have happened or she cleared it by accident, because she asked me, "I said your total was $10.70 right?"
I said- yes.
She asks a guy working there- "so if her total was $10.70 and she gave me $20, how much is her change?"
He looked at her a second and then said- $9.30. And then glanced at me like- OH BOY.
I guess they don't teach counting change in common core math!

Don't try to give someone the coins after they've entered the payment in the register (for example - total is $18.46 and you give a $20, then find $0.50 to give them). I actually had someone hand me back the change and tell me they couldn't do that.

Re: Counting Change
I;ve had this happen to me before at the grocery store. I'm like seriously! I had to tell the girl how much change to give me because she was just standing there not knowing what to do!
Although most kids have smart phones...they can easily just pull up their calculator on their phones if they can't do it in their head.

I was just going to say the same thing.
I can't tell you how many times I had to tell them how much to give me back.
Scary!

this has happened to my mom and she get so annoyed.
I do blame calculators for not being able to do simple math. I sometimes have trouble doing math in my head without a calculator
also as a former cashier I can see some getting fluster when they enter something wrong and/or someone giving them a different amount after they enter it. they are probably afraid they will come up short and get in trouble.
I once had a guy try to rip me off by handing me let say I think a $100 than told me he had a $50 but instead of handing me a $50 he really only gave me a twenty I happen to see him switch it quickly. I closed my drawer and told them I needed a count to proof I was right he left. so the point is people do try to confuse cashiers so I get them sometimes being flustered though they should be able to handle someone giving them change and figuring it out what they should give back to the customer!

Omg I hate that!! I hate when you add the change in- for example if it's 20.52. And you don't have 52 cents but you Hand them $25.02 (so I can get back the 2 quarters rather than 48 cents. It always confuses the cashier!

OMG exactly.
My boyfriend and I went down to Port Jeff the other night - it was a beautiful night out. In the village, near the water, they have parking spots that are numbered and then they have a pay station - almost like a vending machine but you put the space number in, then you enter the amount of time you will need, and it tells you a total. For like FOUR HOURS it was only about $2.00 so my boyfriend goes to enter two singles... and stops.
He's like, where the hell is the dollar bill slot?? I'm like, geez I don't know. We both look. And then we realize - IT DOES NOT ACCEPT CASH. The total is only two dollars -- the most it could be was like seven dollars for like 3897487534 hours of time LOL and it is not equipped to accept cash??
He's like what is happening in this world?!!
He had to DEBIT $2

I truly believe that one day cash will be gone. They even have apps now where you can pay your babysitter etc and just deposit the money right into their acct. Cash is going away.

Counting Change
My 15 year old daughter works at McDonalds, and this is something she has trouble with. But I don't blame her and I don't think its these kids fault. Everything is just so automated now, there is no reason for them ever to have to do it. I laugh because she can do AP Trig but she can't count change back.
When my mother was a cashier as a teen, this was the first thing they were taught, because the register did not tell them the change and they had to know. Now, 75% or more of all transactions are done by debit or credit.

I find this to make a lot of sense. I know everyone's different but I can see people getting thrown off when this happens; even if its a matter of $.04 or $.05 cents.

She said that old people get so angry at her when they throw her the change after she already entered the amount and she has trouble with it!

Re: Counting Change
I don't understand why cashiers aren't being taught this? I learned it when I got my first job and had to work a register at 16.
Is everything really that automated these days? I don't know, but maybe things are a bit different here. I tend to use and carry cash quite a bit because there is usually a limit of 15-20 here to use a card.
I haven't run into this problem of someone not being able to do this here. They also usually ask me for change so they can give me a bill.

I was a cashier in a grocery store when I was in HS- way before smartphones- and even though I was decent at math I would get very flustered when people would do that to me!

My parents own a deli and this i one of the hardest things to train people. We only count back change, there is no inputing it into the register. It is very sad.

I consider myself very good at math but I could see myself getting flustered if there were a line of impatient people standing there waiting. Sometimes I panic under pressure. maybe that happens to some cashiers!
