A vent about social host/underage drinking.

Let me begin by saying this is a vent. If it causes a firestorm of drama, I am sorry. It's not my intention, but I have to get this off my chest.

Plastered all over FB are pics from pre-prom parties where HS kids are drinking.

I know it's not new. They're going to drink. Sometimes with the blessing of their parents at home, sometimes in the basement bars or in the backs of cars... On weekends, holidays, before during and after prom.
I am not going to be a prude and pretend it doesn't exist.

But I'm furious that this is clearly and obviously happening at someone's house, with parents there, snapping pictures, and then plastering them all over FB????!!!!!!???????? Chat Icon Have they lost their minds? Don't they have any morals, values, or regard for the law??? Don't they listen at the MANDATORY pre-prom meeting at their school? Rant over. I just can't believe what I'm seeing. 3 different houses. Chat Icon

+100

If anything happens to one of the kids after their having had a drink at those houses, the host will be in serious trouble. Some people are simply idiots.

I could not agree more and I have a daughter entering college in the fall. I would never serve other people's children in my home. I seriously dont understand what these parents are thinking...

I'm amazed that people would be so stupid in this day and age- not just to serve minors but to post pics of it online. Those parents are causing issues for themselves but also their kids who could also potentially be penalized for drinking. I finished HS in the early 90s and there was no way in hell my parents would have let me attend a pre party where there was drinking and none of my friends' parents would have gone for it either.

they are probably thinking all of the kids' parents are there also, so it's up to them whether or not to allow their own child to drink - The same as any other party where there is alcohol served.
and, they're not driving, but getting on a bus/limo

I personally don't see the need for it.
The "Pre Prom" party is basially 500 parents being papparazzi .........

Re: A vent about social host/underage drinking.

The problem is that in this day and age everyone wants to be their kids friend and not their parent.
That's the issue.

I drank underage in my parents home- at family parties etc, when I was 16 or 17, but we never had parties with my friends where my parents served them all booze.
That to me, is a bit much

I remember I was like 15-16 and at a friends house. My friend grabbed a beer and sat on the couch. Her Mom came home and said hello, then saw her drinking the beer, and said that there was also wine in the fridge if we want. She was so casual about it. It made me feel uncomfortable and I knew it was wrong. I didn't join.

I know in other cultures/counties kids drink young and nothing is ever taboo except in America... But over in those places, it's genuine? Here it feels like parents are trying way too hard to be viewed as cool by their kids and their friends by serving them alcohol. I know many moms and just older women in general who drink once in awhile and have fun, and that's fine. It's good to let hair down here and there. But serving kids just makes me feel bizarre. But then again, in other places ...

But in those cultures, they're having a small glass of wine with a meal. Here, the kids are drinking to get blackout drunk and act like complete fools. Big difference IMO.

Nell is right--parents want to be "cool" and BFF's with their kids. Nobody wants to parent their kids anymore, but in the long run, these kids will have no clue how to take care of themselves or how to make appropriate decisions.

But as far as the OP description we don't know if the kids are getting black out drunk. They could just be having a few and not totally trashed. Not that it makes much of a difference.

True...but I'm pretty sure if kids are starting drinking at a pre-prom party they're probably going to be drinking the entire night.

I completely agree. Sure I drank in high school but our parents never supplied it (at least not knowingly) nor would I have expected them to. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

I've seen some people posting pre-prom party pictures, but it's not outright obvious that what they are drinking is alcoholic. Are you seeing pictures of the drinking from beer bottles? I know in one set of photos they were drinking from plastic champagne glasses, but I know the mom well and she had made them some non-alcoholic type spritzers to drink and served apps and stuff. So unless its clear, its possible they are non alcoholic.

There are definitely cultural differences. My family is from Italy, where there is no drinking age. As a child in the 80's-90's, when we went to visit, our cousins often drank cold beer or wine with their meal. A small glass. We thought it was SO weird and never did it. But, their society did not value getting plastered for recreation as a teenager. Throughout Europe, the social scene doesn't need alcohol to have fun.
The pics I was talking about have Corona beer bottles in hand, REAL champagne bottles and mixed drinks-looking drinks with Pinnacle Vodka in the background. The only ones I can vouch for are the bottles. Ok.
Many of you have echoed what I said in my first post. I'm not going to pretend it doesn't happen. Just how stupid can they be to post pictures of this online??????????

ETA: It's mom's FB page where these pics were posted. I'm not friends with the daugter or so on FB

We all did it (I know I most certainly did). The difference is there was no FB around back then so all the proof we have are pics taken with a disposable camera in a box in someone's parents' basement now.

I remember a few of my friends' parents letting us drink provided we didn't drive there and they didn't let us get blackout drunk. We saved blackout drunk for night that didn't involve parents!

My cousin who is in college has pics of herself half naked with a solo cup in hand plastered all over FB. She's FB friends with my aunt. I'm honestly appalled and wish her luck when she wants a job after graduation.

But the MOM posting pics??? That is a new level of stupidity. She's going to get herself in trouble.
