1 Year Bloodwork - big deal?
Hi everyone.
Due to insurance, we had to change pediatricians this year.
Its a group, so we see different doctors there.
My wife took our daughter in for the 1 year appointment/MMR and Chicken Pox shots (last month).
She liked the doctor (older guy, could be the head of the practice) - she said he spent a lot of time with them.
But after reading the thread on vitamins, I thought we should get DD on them.
I had a day off so I dropped by the office to get a prescription. I actually spoke with the doctor who was working that day and he told me:
1. Living in NYC, he doesnt think we need flouride
2. He recommends the tri-vitamin for now (label says A-C-D, but I thought he said A-D-K?)
3. He said it all depends on the 1 year blood work results
Wait...WHAT 1 year blood work?
I never heard of such things (and I asked my wife, it was never brought up)
The doctor said that all this should have been discussed at the 1 year appointment, and he was surprised it wasn't. He gave us the paperwork and told us to go to the labs and get the bloodwork done sooner rather than later.
So even though my wife liked Doc #1, I don't want DD to see him again because he missed the 1 year bloodwork.
Maybe the doctor I met today would be better.
How big of a deal is missing that 1 year blood work by him?
Shouldn't he have brought it up (and also vitamins)?
Is this a sign that he's not the greatest?

One year bloodwork is standard. Not a big deal. Everyone I know has done it. It was def brought up at our 1 year appt

This. My kids ped does a routine 1 year and 2 year blood work to check for lead levels (we had to take our DS to a lab though).

I personally would be a bit turned off if he forgot about the one year blood work. Not so much that its super important, but more bc what else may he forget? Granted, no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. If you like him, give him another try.
in terms of vitamins, we were told the same thing when living in nyc...no need for flouride vitamins.

The only bloodwork DD got at her 12m appointment was a footprick to test for lead. They tested it in the office and they came back normal. If it had been abnormal, they would have sent us to a lab.

Yeah...that's my thought too. He spends a lot of time with you, but is he too busy chatting to discuss the important stuff?
Sorry everyone, should have been clearer...I'm sure the 1 year is important...I was going more for a "big deal that he didn't mention it? is it a warning sign about him?"

Yes, that would def bother me. He's the dr. It's not my job to ask him about what needs to be done.

My peds is very opposed to flouride, he even advises a non flouride toothpaste and only using a flouride toothpaste maybe once or twice a week and a very small amount. (My dd doesnt drink juice or eat a lot of candy) so he was ok with it as am i.
My dd takes child life multi vitamin its liquid and dd has taken it for like ever so i love it. Its non rx i get it either at my peds office or at my local health store.
i dont know if it means hes not the greatest, i think you can talk to him and ask why it wasnt brought up. Maybe he was going to bring it up next visit... maybe your wife missed when he said it or misunderstood something. Maybe he thought it was discussed previously or was planning to bring it up at the 1 year visit.
i had no clue what to expect at the 1 year visit so i asked during a previous visit. To me thats not a dealbreaker...
I would be more concerned that hes willing to so mmr and chicken pox shots at the same time.

That's what the cdc recommends. Most pediatricians recommend that based on that.

Exactly . Ours were done at the same time.
We could have split it, but when the Dr explained it to me, I prefered to have it done together. Why put her through reactions twice?
She had no reaction btw

As far as the fluoride, NYC drinking water is flourinated, so there is no need for a flouride vit.
Unless you only drink bottled water

The last visit was the 1 year visit (where he should have mentioned the blood test)
Our next scheduled visit would be the 15 month visit.
I don't think it was a case of misunderstanding, because today when I was told about the blood test, I had to get an actual form from them to bring to the lab.
So, my wife didn't get the form at the last visit either.

DD has not had any reactions to the vaccines before...BUT after the MMR/Chicken Pox, a week later she got a fever up to 103.6 for 2 days (gave ibruprophen) and it went down to a low fever 100.
She still seemed happy, but on day 3 and 4, she ate like 1/4 of her normal amount, so we brought her to the ER.
Pointed out her symptoms, and that she had weird dots on her - ER doc said "Thats just her exzcema!!" what the heck!
Then doc #2 said that its probably a reaction to MMR (fever a week after is normal she said)
lol doctors these days...
I said "She normally drinks 30 oz a day of formula and eats 2-3 small meals - yesterday she drank 8oz the whole day and ate nothing"
He said "That's close enough, for her weight, she should drink 20-24 oz, so 8 oz isn't that bad"
what the heck!! lol

Ahhh i misunderstood the op. Im sorry. Regarding when the visit was.
everyones dr is different and will tell you different things... you have to go with what your comfortable with.
Personally i do not follow the cdc guidelines when it comes to vaccinations. I work in healthcare and have my own personal feelings about things. I also have my own feelings about our govt and what they choose to tell us. I do not judge or preach what i do with my child. It is what i feel is best for my family and i believe everyone should do what they feel is best for their family.
All i ever recommend for anyone is do research, dont follow drs advice blindly and find a dr that makes you feel you can trust their judgement the majority of the time.
Most important is it sounds like you dont trust him and rightfully so since he "forgot" to do blood work or even discuss it. If you have liked everything else he has done then i would simply talk to him about it.
If this is just another thing he has done that you dont like then i would say find a new dr or if its a practice with mult docs then i would see another one...
Eta: Your body doesnt need flouride.

One year blood work is normal. Tests for lots of things. Lead is one of them...
