Biting at daycare
Hi Everyone! So my DS is 21 months old and bites other children at day care on occasion.. Meaning he will go weeks months even without biting and then bite.. The day care is working with us but I just feel so helpless.. The other problem is he doesn't do it at home or with his cousins. My concern is he will be kicked out of day care but from what my pediatrician has told us it is completely normal.. Anybody had experience with this? Please This is an in home day care

Biting at daycare
My DS isn't a biter but he's been in daycare since he was 3 months old and he's been bit quite a few times from multiple kids. It really is normal, as frustrating as it must be for you. And it's also totally normal for kids to exhibit a behavior at daycare that they don't practice at home. That's hard because it's out of your control to a great extent. As long as the daycare is aware of it and working on it, this will pass. I would try picking up one of the "no biting" books for kids and read it to him as much as possible. It can't hurt. Hang in there!

Re: Biting at daycare
Hopefully it will pass. I have a home daycare and one little girl I started with last summer brought biting into my house. It was not fun, but she was also older so I feel like she understood that it was unacceptable (2.5yrs old). It made the days very stressful, as I did not want the other children getting hurt OR picking up that habit, but I wouldn't have kicked her out for that. She had a lot of other bad habits that she brought in from the old daycare center she used to go to as well (hitting, pinching, screaming in people's ears, stealing toys, just being a bully in general). I worked very vigilantly with her and did a lot of rewards for her GOOD behavior rather that solely focusing on the bad and it DID pass. My DD even started biting when she saw this little girl doing it, but I kicked that in the butt too. My house is now a bite-free, bully-free zone again. So as long as the daycare isn't ignoring it and working on the problem, I'm sure it will stop. It's just hard when it's not also happening at home so you can't try to work on it as well. If there's no siblings though then it makes sense to only happen with the playmates at daycare.

Re: Biting at daycare
Biting is pretty normal, and there are a lot of reasons he could be doing it. He will not get kicked out of daycare over it unless it continues well past 2 yrs old and even then depending on the reasons. The daycare should be well versed in how to handle and help correct this kind of behavior and you can continue reinforcing it at home.

Same here. My son is not a biter but he gets bit left and right.

Re: Biting at daycare
My DD was a biter. But she only but when bullied by bigger kids when she was pre-verbal. When she started talking, she started scolding kids for their bad behavior.

Re: Biting at daycare
My youngest DS bit three times at daycare.
I got him some books about not biting and read them to him every night. Told him that he would get a hershey kiss if the teacher told me that he didn't bite....had the babysitter bring it with her and give it to him as the teacher said what happened that day. It passed. The daycare said it was normal (I think he was 18 months or so) and he didn't get kicked out.
If you want the books, FM me. I think I still have them.
It will pass....

Re: Biting at daycare
My DD bit a kid a few times and my DS got bit a whole bunch. It is normal and upsetting regardless of which end you're on. You will not get kicked out of daycare for this alone - it is normal and I think all kids find themselves in a biting situation, one way or the other. I think it falls on the day care to monitor the children better so these situations can be avoided.
My DD bit this one child because she was being antagonized by her and the day care wasn't doing their part to keep them separated. She only ever bit THAT kid... that kid also antagonized everyone but my DD was willing to stand up to her (2 year old justice).
My DS was bit because he kept hugging the other kids and they felt attacked/trapped because he was bigger than the rest of the kids in his group and they wanted to get away but were too young to communicate. That day care wound up moving him up to the next class where the kids were bigger and stronger and could withstand DS's affection. It's funny now, 4 years later...
