Jewish moms of daughters come on in

For dd we did a very nice baby naming and an even nicer 1st birthday. Def was costly.

Thinking this time around and maybe combining them. It sure I want to wait until a year tho for her baby naming, although dd was named after my mom and dhs brother so it was very, very important to us. This time not as much.

Thoughts?

I think combining them is totally fine - we did. We put out a blurb about dd's name at her first birthday. To be honest, we didnt have the rabbi say anything about it until she was 15 months old and it was only bc we had a bris for ds or we would have never really done an official "naming"

My friend with twins did this. She combined their first bday party with their naming and it was nice. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

Perfectly fine and I think it's special either way.

I think it is special either way. I think it's a cute idea to have the naming during/around the party. In the religious scheme of things, a baby naming is really kind of pointless (well that is what my rabbi told me, invented because people were tired of the boys getting the circumcision celebration and girls getting nothing) but anyway, my point is- it is whatever you want or need it to be. And that it is OK if it was different for the first than the second. Different babies, different names, different circumstances.

We had a large baby naming but immediate family only first birthday party. How ever you choose to do it will be fine. I have also attended small baby namings and large first birthday parties.

My SILs did this (and combined them with each other!). I personally did not for my dd's, but that is because we did the namings at DH's temple upstate and I don't expect friends to drive that far for a naming/birthday.

It is very common to combine the naming w the 1st bday party.
A naming for a girl is not a time bound commandment like a bris is for a boy. You can do a naming at any age.

The naming wasn't invented to rival a bris, historically girls were always named in synagogue and it was traditionally done the first time the Torah was out following the birth but there isn't a rule as to when like there is with a bris. You're rabbi was prob referring to the parties that now accompany namings, that's a very "new" development

I'd definitely do it together. That's a great idea! Maybe it'll allow you to do a few extra things since it's only the one event.

Ok, so if you did it together, did you not do it at the temple then? Just have a rabbi come to the party and not take the Torah out on the bimah, etc.?

I could do it at our temple which we did the first time and they have a party room and a great caterer so I could do both, naming in the sanctuary and then the party.

You can ask your rabbi or cantor go to the catering hall and have the ceremony there or do everything at the synagogue. It depends on you and your clergy person's preferences/policy and availability.

Re: Jewish moms of daughters come on in

What we did was the day after dd was born, dh, my father, and my father in law went to our temple. dd was still in the hospital and the rabbi said a blessing and "announced" our baby's name. Months later we had a baby naming party at my parent's house. Since we live oos and our families live on li, my parents rabbi and cantor came to my parents house and blessed dd. We had her party then. It was very nice. They gave her a certificate and a mezuzzah. Ds has the boy version of the mezuzzah that their temple gave him at his bris. It is ceramic with a 3d child on it.

We're having a baby naming in our house at her first birthday party. We hired a local rabbi who does this often. I think he charges 400 for the ceremony. It's a lot but I figure it's still cheaper than hosting a luncheon at synagogue and making 2 separate events.
