Has anyone done the Baby and Me class at Saf-T-Swim?

I was thinking of signing my 2.5 year old dd since it is advertised for up to age 3. But when I called I was told its really more of a class for infants, like an intro to being in the water. Not real swimming instruction. Did anyone take their child to that class, and if so, what age was your child and did you feel like the class was worthwhile? Would it be a waste for a 2.5 year old that had plenty of experience in the pool last summer, but just never had swimming instructions.

I am taking my 6 month old son to this class now. I agree with what they're telling you, the class mostly is for babies to get acclimated with the water. My nephew is 2 and also goes there but he does the 1:1 classes with the instructor. I would recommend this for you instead as they do teach them how to actually swim in these lessons.

I agree with above poster. I also di the mommy and me classes, but when my son was around 6-8 months. the kids were no older than a year old. I think 2.5 is defnitely old enough for the one on one instruction if you fee comfortable.

I will say I put my son in the one on one when he was around 1....and he screamed the entire time! Not because hes afraid of water but because he's afraid of strangers...I'm getting up the will to put him in again (he'll be 2 in May). I think he is ready now. I hope :)

I did the baby and me class at the Commack location and it was horrible! I definitely would not do that with a 2 1/2 year old. Honestly I will not be taking that class with my next child either. The teachers were more interested in talking to each other than paying attention to the class.

I did the baby and me class with my then 6 month old and I hated it. It was the Deer Park location. It was more work for the parents. They wouldn't let the babies play w/ any of the toys, and it was the same thing every class. The instructors were more concerned with flirting w/ one another than coming up with creative things to do!

DH and DD (12m) will be doing a session soon bc we got a gift certificate for it. She did the free swim lessons when she was 2-6m old and right after her lesson, they did the baby & me and it was definitely for babies under 18m.

I agree. I took DS when he was five months and it was mostly infants getting acclimated to the pool.

We went to the Bohemia location and had a great teacher, Miss Rebecca (3 years later, I still remember her name, that's how good she was), but when someone subbed for her it wasn't the same.

We took dd when she just turned 2. She has no pool experience.

A few things
- only 1 other older kid in class
- she was so much more afraid than the babies who don't understand the fear
- it worked for us, she got over her fear and have us something to do in cold jan/feb
-this did not teach her anything. If you want your child to learn I wouldn't do this class. I'd do the private lessons.

It worked for us, had a coupon and was inexpensive activity. I think she learned to stick with something and overcome a fear a valuable lesson. She did not learn any actual swimming but this was a good intro for her. Overall not sorry we did it but will do it for Ds when he's much younger if at all.

Thanks for all the replies! I won't sign dd up for that class then. They really shouldn't advertise it for up to age 36 months. I'm just glad at least that they told me over the phone that it's really for younger kids before they took my money for it. What's strange though is this was the third location I called since the first two didn't have days or times available that would work for me, and the first two locations didn't say anything about dd being too old for the class.

They have another group lesson for younger children I think it's called underwater explorers. They focus of going under water, climbing out of the pool, floating on their backs, kicking and front crawl arms. My 18 month old is in the class currently at the Levittown location and loves it. It's significantly cheaper than the 1:1 classes and my hope is by the summer she will be able to swim by herself in our town pool's baby pool and I can continue to teach her on my own.. She is now comfortable going under water during class and the bath tub and that's important to me. I lifeguarded and was a swim instructor myself for years but it's hard to teach her on my own during the winter since public indoor pools are too cold since the temperatures are designed for lap swimming, so safety swim was the best and only option.
