Why do Pediatricians differ?
I have seen various posts about starting solids etc and it seems to depend on the ped when we start feeding our babies....
My DD is 6mths and the ped just told me to start her on rice cereal twice a day and that is enough for now...
Why then do some peds recommend giving veg and fruits at this stage and I saw one poster even say meat.
Why do their opinions differ so much when the standard guidelines at the moment seem to recommend 6mths but when I was a baby I was getting solids at about 4 weeks!!
Its very confusing...I wish there was one party line....

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
At DD's 4 month Pediatrician asked if we wanted to try some cereal and we said if there isn't a reason too we would prefer to continue exclusively breast feeding and was told it was fine! I think they are there to recommend - suggest this and that but ultimately we as mothers know what's best

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
I wish I knew why there were so many different doctor opinions. Ultimately I do think it comes down to the parents discretion. I would have been happy EBF DD for 6 months, but she showed a great interest in food and was always trying to grab what we were eating so we started cereal at about 4 1/2 months. Other babies might not be ready till 6 months.

this is exactly right. I stress so much when I hear all different stories about what drs said to do and not to do. (the posts on starting solids show a lot of conflict!) - its up to the moms to make the decision thats best for their child.

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
Ryans ped. advice even differes from the advice of the other Dr.s in his practice....
It really depends on the parent....
My Dr. told us not to start cereal til 4 months old... the other Dr in the practice had said 3 months...
Well I tried @ 3 months.. and Ryan wasnt ready... however 2 weeks later I tried again- and success!!!! So a combo of both their advice is what works...
Also- @ Ryans 10 month visit... I mentioned to the Dr. that Ryan loves milk.... so he suggested I start weaning.... an 8 week transition... and by the time he was 1 yr. he would be all on milk....
Where as the other Dr. in the practice waits til 11 months, and dosent wean- just switches cold turkey....
It always makes me wonder- what the "right" way is.... but I dont think there is one way....
I also beleive that alot of the things that should be done.. should not be "standard" with every baby-
What an 18lb baby might need, and an 8 lbs baby might need.... can be totally different! (amount of food wise...)

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
I always wonder this myself - it can be frustrating at times and I think as parents we sometimes just have to try certain things and just go with our gut.
i guess it just goes to show - there is no right or wrong thing to do - if it works for your child and the child is a happy camper - then you are doing a good job as a parent - whether it be starting cereal at 3 months or at 6.
All children are different and develop differently - so peditricians just go with their own theory of doing things -

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
I always wondered the same thing as well. I guess I kind of use what the doctor says as a "guideline" and also follow my DD's lead.

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
This is why I decided to stop taking my ped advice as gospel and I literally asking other moms ( you guys and friends and family) for advice. There are 2 peds in my office and they have like completely different opinions on things. I feel like you can do almost anything you want and your kid will be fine.

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
do what works for you. i work with like 20 pediatricians and every one of them has a different opinion about just about everything! old school, new school, opinion, opinion, opinion. Mom knows best just remember that!

Re: Why do Pediatricians differ?
I imagine it has a lot to do with the med school they went to, where they did their internships/rotations, what articles they have read AND the development of the baby in front of them.
