Increased spit up with nutramigen
Has this happened to anyone? At 3 months Ds was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy so I cut back to breast feed 2 times a day and switched to nutramigen for 3 bottles a day. He seemed great! It's been 3 weeks but for the past three nights he's waking up screaming with gas. I assume it's my breast milk so have been giving him only one bf a day. The past two days he spits up a ton of his bottle when I burp him. I mean I've had to change both his and my outfits it's so bad. It's the same bottle and nipple he's been using since 1.5 months old. Any suggestions on what to do? I'm going to try a different bottle tonight and hope that helps. Is it possible it's the nutramigen? His amounts and frequency of feedings have not changed

Is he being treated for reflux as well? That could be the problem. Also, areyou on a no dairy diet as to not aggravate his allergy?

No he wasn't being treated for reflux...just the milk Protein allergy. I am on a no dairy diet but I know sometimes foods are cooked with butter or milk and I still eat them. I assume that's why he's waking with gas and as of today I'm done breast feeding. I know it can take up to a month to get the milk protein out of his system completely. But my concern is with the spitting up bc I doubt that's allergy/dairy related. Or is it?

Re: Increased spit up with nutramigen
If your BM is completely dairy free, it may be the formula. Nutramigen still contains traces of dairy. The proteins are just broken down a lot more. Nutramigen was fine for my DS but my twins did not respond to it (still blood in stool, spit up, etc. ). They are now on Elecare, which is completely dairy free and hypo allergenic. The huge spit ups can be related to the dairy. For one twin, his spit up is due to reflux. The other one would projectile vomit on regular formula. IMO, there is a big difference between spit up bc of reflux and vomiting from the allergy. In my experience, reflux spit up is not as much, where allergy spit up/vomit was much more forceful and a lot more of it.

It could be related or it could be coincidental. DS starting spitting up a ton around 5 months old. Lasted about 3 months and then it slowed down and eventually stopped. He had been on Nutramigen for a while before the spitting up got really bad, so for him, it wasn't related. I just got used to walked around with spit up down my back half the time!

did you try a different brand? MY DD didn't respond well to enfamil products and had constipation and was constantly spitting up my dr recommended nutramagin and it didn't help at all. We switched to similar sensitive and it did the trick

Try Similac Alimentum. My nephew had a milk protein allergy (as did both of my kids) and he threw up nonstop when he was on Nutramigen but did fine on Alimentum. Being you're eating foods with cooked dairy, it may still be a reaction. I had to eliminate all dairy and traces of dairy in my diet for both of my kids. For my dd, I supplemented with Alimentum. I had to add Earth's Best Oatmeal to her bottles because she had reflux, too. Keep in mind both Nutramigen and Alimentum are thinner than regular formulas.

DD was on acid as well as Nutramigen and it helped. It could be because it is thinner too. Ask the dr about adding cereal to the bottle. It might be better to feed him cereal before a bottle so it sits better in his belly.
