DS climbing out of crib

DS just turned 2 and our crib is at the lowest setting, and he is able to climb out on his own. I don't know that he is ready for a toddler bed yet because knowing DS he would constantly be getting out of bed and going into our room/or wandering about the house. I just wanted to get some advice on BTDT parents... do I have to drill my own holes to make the crib even lower?

Oh boy. I know when my nephew turned 2 he climbed out and my sister converted to a toddler bed.

I have heard of people taking out the bottom and putting the mattress on the floor. No clue how to do that or if it would even be safe?!

We moved my ds to a twin at 2. He never climbed out but he's a roller so we thought he'd be more comfy. I was worried he would be up all night out if bed but it rarely happens. We have a gate at the top of the stair so he won't go down.

Is it a style you can turn to the wall? I've heard of putting the mattress on the floor too but I'd think they could just move it and get out of the bottom. Does he do it often or just once. Dd did once and never again. She didnt even cry.

My DS fell out of the crib twice. Both times I was in the room. He is now almost 3 and does not attempt to climb out of the crib at all. Waits until I am in the room to get up. Dreading going to a bed.

Thanks all. He has done it I would say 3x this past weekend. Thankfully he hasn't hurt himself getting out yet. But I guess I have to see how it looks with the mattress at the bottom. DS cannot sit still so I totally see him coming into my bedroom every 2 seconds.

My son hasn't done that yet, but my friend's son has. She converted to a toddler bed, put a gate at his door so if he gets up he can't walk around the house. She also took out a lot of his furniture cause he was climbing on that too.

Does your crib have a higher back? If so can you turn it around? We did this with my daughters. Now the shorter part is against the wall and now she can not get out.

when my 2 year old started climbing out of the crib, nothing stopped her. we knew we were not comfortable with her going into a bed for all the reasons you mentioned, so my husband had the great idea of fortifying her crib. we used a octagon shaped gate, deconstructed, and built up each side of the crib except the tallest side (formerly the back side). my husband works in construction and got some nylon zip tie things, and once it was all built and up and secure, she could not climb out. it was awesome and bought us another year til she was ready to go into her big girl bed at 3. something to consider.

I would take him out he can get hurt if he climbs out. you may think he is not ready but he may just be. I moved DD out around that time and the first 3 days was a bit torturous but after that she was fine. I would either put a gate up if you are afraid of him wondering or though I know most wont agree I put one of those door knob covers in the inside knob so she couldn't open the door herself we kept it there for several months then took it off.

We converted the crib to a full sized bed (we also used a very long bed rail from BRU) at 24 months and it worked out really well for us.
