Possibly potty training ????

Ok, so we're SOOO NOTTT the types to push and make strategies and tactics and try to "get them" to potty train before their time.

J Anthony took his time, potty trained cold turkey, we never bought one pull-up, he potty trained in a week, it took us a month to really realize it was for real Chat Icon

He was 3 and a few months. just about 3 1/2.

Now Luca is almost 2 1/2, so we think it's WAYYY early, not to even bother, and I hate falling for false promises "OMG he hates having his diaper changed, maybe he's ready". I think the biggest part of potty training is the child comprehending WHEN they need to go, HOW to stop it/hold it, and how to take action to go in the potty.

The past few weeks, Luca has been saying "I go potty, I go potty" or he just takes his diaper off as soon as he has peed or pooped (its usually fresh, warm pee, or the poop hasnt even touched his toosh). The past week, Ive caught him taking his diaper off 3 times a day, he just pees and takes it off (Ok, close, but the beginnings of the thought process are there...)

So today, we were in the backyard, in the pool, and thankfully J Anthony hasnt even THOUGHT of peeing in the pool (yay!) so he immediately jumps out and goes "I have to go potty! I have to pee" so mommy, desperate, big belly and all, by the time I waddle him inside, dry him up a little so he doesnt soak the whole house, I told him ONLY when no one is over, only in emergencies, he can pee on the tree, way in the back of the yard Chat Icon Chat Icon
He's had emergencies where he pees on the way to the potty when he's all wet from a pool/sprinkler. so the odds of him making it into the house, up the stairs (downstairs br under construction Chat Icon )

Well anywho, today Luca shocked me twice. He goes "mommy I gotta pee" and Im like yeah right. I walk over to him, and since he saw big brother peeing "on the floor" he took his diaper off and acted like he was peeing too.
He didnt pee, so I thought hah, cute.
He kept saying "mommy I gotta pee, I pee on the floor" and I said "NO NO we go potty come on!" and we were already almost dry, so I rushed him inside, and by the time we got in, he ran to play, I figured the excitement of having to pee wore off. Hes never gone on the potty, so I knew it was all talk... welll.....Chat Icon Chat Icon
I peek into the great room, to see what he's doing as I towel myself off, and he's PEEING ON THE FLOOR in the great room !!!!!!! Chat Icon
He was serious the whole time !!!!!!!!!!Chat Icon

So then as soon as I walked in and said NOOO NO NO NOOO STOP IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE stopped on instant Chat Icon and I figured we can finish up in the potty.
I didnt have cheerios, so I put a piece of a cracker in the water and said pee on the cracker Chat Icon he held and squeezed his dinky, trying to make it come out Chat Icon and kept saying "mommy I cant do it" and i TOTALLY remember John Anthony when he'd stand there and nothing would come out. the intention was there, but he didnt know why it wouldnt come out at that instant...

so I guess we're getting SOME potty thought process going on....

I really dont know if I can do the "let him run around naked" thing, but he seems to be giving us more cues than we thought ! cross your fingers that we continue to have only ONE in diapers after baby is here ! Chat Icon

and thanks for reading my novel Chat Icon

WOW Thats awesome !!!
I guess there's truth to the "girls potty train earlier" thing. My niece was pt'd at 22months! (but her sister was 3, so totally different)...

Should I continue to nag him about it, or just go by his cues ? I dont want to overwhelm him or make him regress.

Re: Possibly potty training ????

Thanks! Yes, she was trained about a month ago (not a night though.) We've had many starts and stops, but it's official now.

I say to go with it. There's no harm in supporting his interest in the potty. It may get set back with the third (we had it happen here with the second) but at least there's a knowledge. IMHO.

Re: Possibly potty training ????

OK, we'll see where he takes us with this Chat Icon

Its too weird because it was deja-vu how he was holding it TRYING to make it come out, because he WANTS to go on the potty. JA just did this a few months ago Chat Icon

and just how he peed when he said he had to, and waited for the "right moment" Chat Icon

I guess we have nothing to lose by taking his diaper off in the backyard.
but I dont want him to get used to
"just having no diaper on/being naked (or I can put no diaper under his bathing suit ? Chat Icon )
and peeing "on the floor" is not something I want him to think is ok Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

we'll see what tomorrow brings Chat Icon

Re: Possibly potty training ????

That is great! And not too early in my opinion. Jack is 21 months and we are training right now. He peeped and pooped on the potty this am!

Re: Possibly potty training ????

I dont think its too early - he wants to do what big brother is doing. I have the same going on here - more or less, Ill hav to teach her to sit to pee though LOL. Of course being 9 months preggo or recovering from a c/s or up at all hours with a newborn doesnt make it easy for you to do the work that it takes to get a new trainer into the bathroom often enough so see how you feel. Yay Luca!!!!
