when did you introduce a fork/spoon?

DD seems very interested in "helping Mommy" feed her, especially with spoons. She loves holding the spoon while I scoop and put it in her mouth. She doesn't seem to get the concept yet of doing it herself. She enjoys feeding herself with finger foods, but in was wondering when you should let them use/teach them to use utensils? How did you do it? How long did it take for them to figure it out? Thanks!

When he seemed interested in the spoon, we let him have it. He made a huge mess and got some of it in his mouth, but they have to learn sometime!

When we started with spoons - even before a year - we used two spoons - one for her, one for me - that sped things along. It didn't come close to getting in her mouth but some sticky stuff like apple sauce worked a little bit.

We gave ds one probably by 6 months. In the beginning it was just to hold and then he figured it out over time.

I can't remember when we started. We gave him a spoon or baby fork when he started reaching for it. It was definitely before 1 year. Now, at 17 months old, DS can feed himself with a fork well. The spoon is still pretty messy, if it's something like yogurt, but he has fun with it!
