Allergies
What does everyone give their kids with allergies to help? We have been using Claritin but it doesn't seem to be giving much relief with his eyes.
Any suggestions?

Allergies
Claritin in the mornings (1/2 tsp) and Benadryl before bed (1 tsp). Doc said Claritin (1/2 tsp) every 12hours but I argued that with that dosage its hard to know if she's even needing it. So she agreed that I can give her none if she is fine in the morning (not happened yet) or hold off at night and given Benadryl instead as it wears off faster
Zrytec did nothing for her
Allerga made her feel 'yucky'
But doc said any of the 4 were fine.
Been on Claritin since she was 18m

Tried every over the counter and nothing worked. Took him to the Peds and then was told to see an allergist. He was tested and shows that he is very allergic to tree pollen. His back got a huge, swollen bump from the scratch test.
He's on a prescribed medicine, which helps, but he is still miserable. Looking forward to the rain tomorrow to get some relief. Not even taking him outside today. I had to put the AC on for the first time this year bc he was outside all day yesterday and got so bad.

I do Claritin at night and Benadryl during the day as needed. But just half the dose or he is bouncing off the walls!

Claritin during the day and pataday eye drops.
Benedryl at night.
Both my sons are a mess right now. Their eyes look horrible. Had to keep them inside today to calm everything down. Been vaccuming, keeping windows shut with AC. Baths everyday and changing sheets especially pillow cases every other day.

ZYRTEC (or the Costco version) works best for him!

just curious which Benadryl do you use?
I only use the dye free and it does NOT make her hyper actually knocks her out.
I get the Target brand.

Everyone seems to be using benadryl with the other meds. I asked my dr. about the benedryl and he seemed reluctant to give me an ok.
Did your ped ok it?

My ped ok'd it. At the time she recommended the dye free due to it not causing hyper activity and she knew we were going on a plane. Two parts. One for her allergies one to have as a back up for the flight (which ironically I forgot the bottle!). She was two and we were flying to Hawaii. She had NO allergy symptoms on Maui - so I guess I should move there! I even had a dermatitis thing that cleared itself up while being in Hawaii. LOL
Since then its been her recommendation Claritin first, then Benadryl. Not that one was worse than the other but she wanted the constant dose of Claritin since its 24hrs given in 12hr doses. I, however, prefer periods of non-drugged status. So we only give her Claritin in the morning and let her 'fade off' after school if she's suffering I'll dose her with Benadryl to get through the night and then back to Claritin for the 12hour day.
I ran this by the doc. she ok'd that.
Actually I asked when I could STOP the drugs and she said she'd rather have her on allergy meds than to get a post nasal drip that becomes an infection, etc.
So she's been on allergy meds constant since then. But the doses are different.

My DD is 8, and has been AWFUL with allergies since she was about 4. We give her Singulair every night, starting about a month before allergy season kicks in. So we started it this year in late March. And we give her Xyzal 5mL every morning. When she is really bad (like now), I also give her Benadryl at night. In addition, she gets Pataday eye drops in the morning (as a pharmacist, I don't really think these are very effective but we try anyway); plus she gets Visine-A (or Naphcon-A) every couple of hours as she needs it for the itchy eyes. I also just started Nasacort, but don't want to keep that up for very long.
We've been through the Claritin, Allegra and Zyrtec already. None really helped her much. I have an appointment for an allergist and I think we'll start allergy shots soon.

Claritin is the weakest. We use Allegra. Zyrtec is best but makes my kids act strangely so we go with Allegra.

We can't use Benadryl either. Makes my girls extremely hyper. It does that to some children-has the opposite effect. Some kids get more hyper when tired too. We only use dye free medicines. I do have a bottle with dye for emergencies but use the due free when we needed it.

My allergist and ped said not to bother. It last 4 hours so you either give them more or let them suffer. We only use allergra. I know generally what they are allergic to and follow the pollen counts. I will skip a dose if I think they are past the time they need it. These medicines work best when taken regularly. I know for example I get better relief on day 2 or 3 or Allegra than day one. So when you give is more sporadically it doesn't work quite as well as not skipping doses.
