potty training help with almost 3 yr old

DS will be 3 on 5/11. We started full on toilet training this weekend and I could really use some suggestions! He needs to be toilet trained by Sept. so he can move into the preschool room at day care. We have also said we wouldn't TTC # 3 until DS is trained so we wouldn't be facing the possibility of 3 in diapers. He will sit no problem, but waits until he gets up and we have put the diaper back on him to go. He has peed twice, never pooped. His teachers at day care say not to use pull ups because they are really just glorified diapers. I know we are in the very early stages, but does anyone have any ideas? Thinking of cheerios in the toilet for him to aim at, or having a chart where he gets a treat for every 5 times he goes- like ice cream or some M & M's or something. TIA! Chat Icon

Re: potty training help with almost 3 yr old

In the beginning he needs to get a treat for every time he pees in the potty. Something as small as 1 m&m. We trained DS when he was 1 week shy of 3. We started with a couple potty books so he knew what to expect and what the goal was. Then we just went straight into undies. I started out doing undies a couple hours a day but wasn't consistent so then I just decided to do undies all day. The 1st time he started to pee in the undies he felt them wet and we ran to the bathroom. Only a few drops got on his undies. I reminded him not to get pee pee on the undies and that was it. I used the m&m's as a reward. 5 m&m's for poopie. Poo took 2 days (he wouldn't poo in the potty the 1st day) but did the 2nd day. We knew DS was ready to be trained bc he had been waking up dry for months. And, he would never poo in his diaper when we were out. He always waited until we got home. So we knew he could control bladder and bowel movements.

Re: potty training help with almost 3 yr old

I dealt with this twice.

Both of my boys needed to be trained by Sept so they could enter their three year old preschool class. Neither were ready to do it.

Stickers, treats, videos, I tried it all with my first son. Nothing worked except when his peers noticed a diaper peeking out of his pants and commented. In 5 minutes, they accomplished what I tried to do for 6 months!!!

I learned my lesson with the second. I mentioned it from time to time. I didn't make a big deal out of it. He refused to even pee on the potty. About two weeks before school started, he asked to use the potty. He insisted on wearing underwear. He literally trained himself. If they want to do it, they will.

I say relax a bit and just try and have him go to the bathroom with your husband. Buy underwear of his favorite characters. Be casual about it. There are other methods, but I believe this so one of those things that they can control, and we cannot.

Go cold turkey & throw out diapers!!! He will have no choice but to pee & poop in the potty eventually!!! Worked great for my son

Treats and bribes didn't worked with my DS. I tried everything for months. Sticker charts, M&M's, standing to go pee pee and that freaked him out even more. What worked for us was just putting him in underwear. I did try this a few times in the past few months but kept losing patience after a few accidents. Finally about a month ago i just put him in underwear and after a full day of peeing himself he finally started to tell me he had to go pee pee. He still sits to pee because the thought of standing up to pee freaks him out still. So i don;t push it. He only wears pull ups at night and wakes up dry most of the time so after i am done with this pack he will be pull up free. We are still working on poop training as he wont always tell me but poop training can be harder. Good luck!!
