Just curious what other 8 month olds are doing.

my son I feel is hitting all the milestones on time except he has such a problem with eating anything slightly chunky, puffs, and even pastina. If its not a complete puree than he will gag. Am I just expecting too much? What is everyone else eating?

How long have you been trying these foods? He may not be ready just yet. Keep trying!

Have you tried crunchy foods instead of chunky? Or softs, like a real pasta? Pastina is a love it or hate it kind of thing. DS hates it. I'd give it another week or two and keep trying.

My DD threw up the first time we gave her a puff. We tried cutting it in half and wetting it and that worked - then as she got used to that - we gave it to her dry and then the whole thing.

The puffs I break up into pieces. I couldnt imagine giving bigger pasta I would be so nervous. I have been trying puffs for a couple weeks. Pastina just yesterday. DH and I went out to an italian restaurant the other day and the waiter asked if I wanted a couple of pieces of gnocxhi on the side plain for ds. I told him he cant eat that yet and he said his daughter has been eating pasta from like 6 months! Im gonna keep on trying.

Re: 8 month old

I thnk we were just starting table foods around 7/8 months, but dd hated purees, so we had to press the issue a little more. I remember I used to defrost the frozen mango chunks and hold onto one while dd gummed at it. We did the same with watermelon. That was probably what familiarized her with the feeling of food in the mouth.

I also mushed up soft stuff from homemade chicken soup. I gave meatballs fairly early on, too, completely mushed. And eggs, scrambled with some water to make them softer. Dr. Praegers spinach patties by 9 months. Those are really soft, especially in the microwave. The broccoli patties are firmer, those I waited longer on.

Puffs I cut in half.

Cheerios I soaked in coconut milk (dd was milk allergic)

Pastina was a hit but the messiest thing in the world to clean up.

Take cues from him. I think it's ok if he's going slow at it.

Thank you. I know there is no need to rush anything and I am fine going at his pace. Just curious what other babies were doing. Ill keep trying and Im sure he will get it no one eats purees for the rest of their life :)
