New here & our baby girl was born Friday morning
Hello everyone,
Joining you here & very excited. I have a question about breastfeeding & milk supply. Right after birth Friday latched on & got started so I was very happy with that. Changed a few dirty diapers so i knew it was working. Saturday night we had issues with feedings from 10:30 -1:30 am. She was latched on & could see her sucking but she never stopped crying. Could it be that my full milk supply still hasn't come in yet?? I had to give her formula that way I knew she was eating.
I don't want to get discouraged with breastfeeding. I just tried about an hour ago but she still seemed to be hungry.
How do you know when you have full milk supply??
Thank you for any support & guidance you can give.

Congrats and welcome to the parenting board.
It def took more than two days for my milk to really come in. Best of luck and keep trying. You can always reach out to la leche for support groups and/or phone calls/consultations.

I had the same concern I actually asked the hospital to weigh her before I fed her, fed her, and then asked them to weigh her again so I knew how much she had taken. Once I was home, I would do the same thing in her tub that gave us a weight reading.
A lactation consultant can also come to your house and do the same thing. You might even be able to ask your pediatrician if you could do that in their office.
If she is pooping regularly she is probably getting enough.
DD wasn't getting enough until she was 4 days old. I had to supplement with formula.

Congrats!! If she is pooping, she is getting milk. Babies only need very little in the beginning and their stomachs are only about the size of a Ping pong ball on day 3.
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. You'll probably know when your milk is fully in and you'll start to feel a let down. You can also listen/watch to see if she is swallowing or just sucking.

Thanks ladies. The thing is she isn't content after feeding on Saturday night. That's how I knew after all that sucking she didn't get enough from me and I'm not sure if it has to do with my supply. I can contact a lactation consultant for guidance. Anyone ever ask?

How long is she feeding for? DD could stay on one side for 45-60 minutes in the beginning. I doubt she was getting much after all that time but they may need the comfort and it does help build your supply. I would let her stay on as long as she likes, then switch sides, and if she's not content go back to the first side. Or just try swaddling and bouncing to get her to relax since it's very likely a comfort thing. In the first few days I often would do a long feeding, then swaddle and bounce for a while, and would end up feeding her again if she wouldn't go to sleep and that would usually get her to pass out. It can be scary but I would definitely try to avoid supplementing so early. Your milk should come in in another day or two but for now she doesn't need much at all.

Congrats!
I think it's just too soon, it took a good 3-4 days before my milk came in. I understand your concern, I was very upset about it bc my DS would scream his head off he was so hungry. But it will come soon and she will be fine. Just keep at it!

Congrats. With both children, my milk came in on day 4. Once it is in, you can take Fenugreek tablets to increase the amount. Don't worry about supplementing as newborn"s tummies are tiny and don't need much.

Hi ladies,
I was a little better emotionally today. She does still latch on to both breasts but what should I do if she is still fussy after our session? I try to spend a good 15 min on each breast but when she becomes content, once I put her down, she is fussy again and likes to suck her thumb after feeding. We had about 2 wet diapers and 1 poopy diaper today.
She should still be getting enough w just colestrum right? Could it not be satisfying her?
How do I know when my milk comes in exactly? Is it impossible to not know bc milk will be thicker & keep them fuller?
I will not give up, not on day 3, so easily bc I really want to do this.
I appreciate your help ladies.

Is she unlatching after 15 minutes or are you taking her off? I would leave her on as long as she likes. It will help your supply. Also hold her as much as possible since that will stimulate your supply and her nursing. You will definitely know when your milk comes in bc you will feel very full and for me my breasts felt very firm before a feeding. I would definitely talk to a LC or your ped but that doesn't seem like a lot of wet and dirty diapers for a newborn. I don't want to worry you but I think it's worth making a call to see what they say. In the meantime, just nurse as much as you can. Are you getting in at least 8 feedings a day?

My supply came in between day 3 and 4 after my daughter was born. You will know when it comes in your chest will be feel full and hot. Colostrum should be sufficient to sustain your daughter until your milk comes in. The first few days were tough for me but by day six it started to get easier. I met with a lactation consultant in the hospital and it helped me with the mechanics but it took my daughter and I awhile to find our groove. My pediatrician recommended nursing for 5-7 minutes on each breast- he said the baby gets the most milk in that time frame and it reduces the amount of air the baby takes in. This change has helped my daughter to have less gas.

I nursed today and squeezed my breasts down to the nipple and white substance trickled out. Could that be the milk coming up?? We had a good feeding session on both breasts so is it safe to say that she took to the milk?

she was born on 3/14 so wed would be day 5. . I mean milk isn't shooting out yet but I kind of wish it would that way I can clearly see that she is taking it in. She also may be constipated only 2 poppy diapers in 24 hrs. Going to ped today.

Congratulations! I knew my milk came in because I was extremely engorged. It was day 4 with DS1 and day 3 with DS2. Keep her on the breast for as long as she wants. DS1 nursedand for 45-60the minutes asand a newborn. The more she nurses, the more your body should produce. She could be fussy because she just wants to suck. Both of my kids were soothed by sucking and I introduced the pacifier early on with no issues. Good luck!
