Double ear infection help
Dd, 18mos has her first double ear infection. Came on with a fever and no other symptoms except a slightly runny nose. Dr said let it run course. A day later she started coughing. Took her back and it's a double ear infection. She's on an ab now (day 2) her cough has gotten worse all day. She's super miserable and cranky. Probably the worst I have ever seen her. Since 8pm she's basically non stop coughing in her sleep. Now her cough is high pitched sounding, she's moving around but not really crying so I guess she's sleeping.
Does all of this sound normal with an ear infection? She's had pneumonia before and this is NOT the same type of cough. It's not a wet rattly chest cough. More like a dry hack, the type that I know probably hurts her throat and gives no relief.
Any advice? I will take her back to dr first thing.

Double ear infection help
Our bronchial virus turned into a double ear infection and croup. She needed steroids for the croup.

I just listened to videos of croup and don't think she has it. And omg it sounds so effing scary and really like a seal bark. If I had heard that we would have been to the er.
I just don't see her getting better since Thursday!

Re: Double ear infection help
both my kids had a lot of ear infections; in fact, they both had the tubes put in. For them, the coughing was always a symptom and if they weren't running a fever, the coughing is what would make me bring them into the doctor. Nine times out of ten the coughing was due to the post-nasal drip from the ear infection; their chest and lungs were always clear. Both my kids have had bronchitis and my DD had pneumonia once, but never with an ear infection.
It could be that you're noticing the cough more at night because she is laying down and so if it is post-nasal drip it's just being coughed up. I always noticed my kids coughed more at night with an ear infection.
I would think that if the cough is getting worse after another day on the anti-biotic, I would call the doctor. GOOD LUCK!

Re: Double ear infection help
YES normal! My 13m DD has an ear infection right now with a cough. Keep in mind, ear/nose/throat - all connected. Just keep an eye on the cough. If she sounds wheezy, she should be seen again!
Use a humidifier, saline her, give Benadryl to "dry her up" (call ped for dosage)
We have even been using Dimetapp cough low dosage at night and it helps a ton!

Double ear infection help
Thanks everyone. We went back to the doctor with a video of her coughing at night. She's all clear in the chest, eats still infected and doctor said she probably has a virus on top of the ears. Or it's all related somehow. After having pneumonia any time she coughs I am on alert.
