I think my son just passed out!!

My 9 month old got shots yesterday but has been fine. Had these shots before with no reaction. Just before he pooped thru his clothes so I put him down to change him and I don't think he wanted to lay down so he started to cry, well his cry for so bad so quick his face turned red/purplish and then his eyes rolled. I grabbed him up and blew in his face and he took a deep breath and then opened his eyes. He's seems perfectly fine now but it freaked me out.
Has this happened to anyone before?
Would u do anything?

My son stops breathing occasionally when crying when he's really hurt or when he's tired and gets upset.

I know I sound like a bad mom but I keep on forgetting to ask the ped about it.

Call your peds office. Even if they're not open they have a doctor on call. If not pm pediatrics just to be safe. Chat Icon

I don't have any experience with something like that, but I'd call the ped just to be on the safe side. That must've been so scary! Glad he's ok now!Chat Icon

I think my son just passed out!!

Dd has cried so hard she turns red/purple and it's like she's holding her breath before she finally lets out a huge wail. Her eyes have never rolled back tho. That would scare me. I'd def call your dr

I think my son just passed out!!

I've known a few babies who have done this. They cry and hold their breath until they turn blue and sometimes pass out. The parents blow in the baby's face which gets them to breathe again, which is what you did.

Just spoke with my ped and they said it happens, some kids have like stop breathing spells that make themselves pass out with temper tantrums and crying!! Hopefully it never happens again but she said I did right thing by blowing in his face to make him take a breath.

This used to happen to my nephew and started at 9 months. The first time was scary, but eventually he outgrew it.

Re: I think my son just passed out!!

My son has done this since around 12 weeks of age. It has lessened now that he is older20 months (maybe his lung capacity increased hehe). It happens exactly the way you described- cries, holds breath turns purple/blue and passes out, comes to and is completely normal. He does it when he is super tired or sick more frequently and it comes when he gets upset about something or hurts himself. It looks scary but is harmless per my pedi. most outgrow it by 3-4 years of age. Its called breath holding spells.

I was told i always did this as a baby too. I am sure it must be very scary but as previous posters said he should be fine and will outgrow it. I certainly did LOL.

I think my son just passed out!!

id call it in.

But yes.. my brother would do this.. and kept doing it as he got older. The going joke even when I was old enough to notice was 'oh, oh, he's gonna pass out.. watch" which to be fair only made him angrier and he cried hard until he did actually pass out. I'm almost 4yrs younger than him so yeah it was for awhile obviously that he continued this trait.

Re: I think my son just passed out!!

This happens to my neighbors son a lot. Her Ped told her that it's more common than people think and that it's not really something to be too concerned about...that eventually he'll outgrow it. I would still call my Ped though if one of my kids did that.

I imagine it's very scary when it happens to your own child. Poor thing!
