Question to ask in regards to a playdate? Is it appropriate?
I do not think there is anything wrong with asking the question. My husband is a cop and we do have a gun in the house. When he is home it is locked away.
I would hope that none of the parents of my son when he gets older would not allow them to come to a play date at my house because of this but if so I guess there is nothing that I can do about it.

Question to ask in regards to a playdate? Is it appropriate?
It's you child and their safety so it's absolutely appropriate. However, I would think that if someone has a gun that's not properly secured, they may not admit it to you anyway. It may make them think about changing things though. It's scary and I have thought about it which is why I'm glad we're no where near the age of playdates where DD wouldn't be in my site at all times. I know there are plenty of friends and family member of ours that own guns and I do trust that they secure them but when the time comes for playdates with school friends I don't know as well I don't know what I'll do.

Re: Question to ask in regards to a playdate? Is it appropriate?
I'd be fine as long as the guns were in a safe.
Frankly, I'd be far more concerned about drop off playdates at a home with a pool. I know too many parents who are NOT vigilant about kids and pools. Or certain types of dogs. We don't have a dog ourselves, so my kids aren't that accustomed to them. And everyone's dog is "the biggest mush"... until it bites someone.

Im the same way with a pool...thankfully my older ones can swim now. I can't wait until they all can. At least it will give me some peace

Re: Question to ask in regards to a playdate? Is it appropriate?
My son has had one drop off playdate at a friend's house. When we set up the plans I did ask if they had any guns or dogs in their home. My husband insisted we find out-I felt a little uncomfortable asking but I did it anyway.
Like others have said, if someone said they did have them, I wouldn't automatically say my child could not play, but I would need to know that they were locked securely away. The person I asked giggled a bit and said they did not have a dog or guns in the home. But then she thought about it some more and thanked me for asking. She said she would have never thought to ask but she will in the future.
As for the dog, I know it is irrational but I do have a fear of certain dogs. We have a dog, but most of the time we crate him when we have company because he is large (about 95 pounds) and gets really excited to see new people and jumps on them. Not what people want when they visit someone's house!

I agree with this. Id be more concerned over pool safety and a dog. We are dog lovers, we have a dog, a pit bull. I know she is a giant mush and loves people. BUT whenever kids are over, she is put away, with the exception of my niece and nephew. I don't think she would ever do anything. But there is always that one chance. Even if she were a small dog, I would do the same. I would not be comfortable with my kids at a home with a dog running around freely. No matter the breed. MY kids are rough with their dog and I wouldn't want to take any chances.

If it is locked away and secure, I do not have an issue with that.

Re: Question to ask in regards to a playdate? Is it appropriate?
depends on age...
If I am staying then I really don't have a question.
If I am dropping off(which my kids arent at that age) then yeah I guess I would have to ask if there were a gun, and wouldn't want my kid in the house if there were one..... Geeze, I guess that would mean changing the playdate to my house.

I don't think it's inappropriate, but it's not something I'd do.

Im not clear what made you come up with this question? Are there guns in your home? Or do you know gun owners? I never even thought to ask that question.
ETA: Are you married to someone in law enforcement? OR are the kids going to someones house that is in law enforcement?
I guess this is such a foreign question to me Im wondering where its coming from? Maybe Im just naive LOL
It's important to know because if they don't secure the guns well and curious kids get a hold of them the result could be deadly...however asking doesn't mean you'll get the truth. There's no real way to know.
