Definitely buy a carseat that comes with inserts. Adding anything to the carseat could make it unsafe.

I loved my chicco keyfit magic. The fabric is breathable and it comes with head and body inserts that are reversible for changing seasons as well as a winter boot that goes over top in the winter.

I think most come with the infant insert. Which car seat did you register for?

Mine came with an insert - I couldn't find it right away for DS 2 so I used rolled up receiving blankets to support his head.

Mine came with an insert but it did nothing in terms of support for my dd. She was 6lbs 3 oz born and came home at 5 lbs 15 oz. I needed the JJ Cole body contour. I also used it in her rock n play to sleep and was the only way she started sleeping through the night. She HATED being swaddled.

I say register for it and have it on hand but keep the package closed. This way if you need it you have it and if you dont you can exchange it for something else.

You never know how big or small baby will be.

My car seat is a Britax B Safe (the insert was a joke it offered no support for a small baby)

Just the one that came with the seat. I have an older model chicco from 2010 so it only goes up to 22 pounds. When DS came home he weighed 4pounds 10 ounces (he was 10 days old, born 7 weeks early) and it was fine

mine came with an insert but the hospital told us not to use it and actually had us roll up receiving blankets and use those instead. This was 2 years ago - not sure what the safety recommendations are now.

If it comes with a headrest use that if not you need to roll up receiving blankets to pad around. Anything else voids the warranty and in a crash the insurance company could refuse to refund you the money. Plus they are not tested with after market supports.

Yes. The brown/tan in infant seat is the newborn insert.
