How rude is it to bring a friend to a bday party?

I have heard a few stories where a birthday guest brings a friend, cousin, neighbor, etc. and thought how obnoxiously rude that was.

Now I'm in a bit of a crunch. We moved to the DC area 2 yrs ago. One of our closest friends from NYC is visiting us next weekend(only be at our house one day). We have plans to attend a bday party at one of closest friends in VA. I actually think my two friends would get along fabulously as will their daughters who are the exact same age. Both these families are friends where the husbands, wives and kids are all good friends, which is why we hang out so often.

I know if I ask our friend, she would say yes but it just sounds so rude. At the same time, both of these families are very good friends. Our friend's house is HUGE. Money would be a complete non-factor for them although they do hand out extravagant party favors.

WWYD?
A. Ask friend if you can bring friend.
B. Have DH go to party with DS while I host our guests with our younger son
C. Stop by party and drop off gift only
D. Decline the bday party and state that your out of town friends will be visiting and see if host invites friend.

I choose A. I would explain the situation to your friend and see if you can bring them. It doesn't hurt to ask.

based on what you are saying, i dont think your friend would have a problem with your other friend coming along. however, the type of person I am, i would not feel comfortable asking so i would decline the party saying you have a oot friend visiting with their child and hope they extend the offer to come along.

I would ask my friend - if she is a good friend. It is just one extra child and it is at her house.

B/D - tell your friend that only DH will be at the party b/c you will be home hosting your friends from NY.

IF and only if she offers, then you can bring the friend along to the party.

I think I lean towards this. That's a tough one given all the info. I would never ask to bring another guest but your situation is outside the norm.

If she's a close friend, I'd pretty much lay the situation out to her saying you'll be sending your older child with DH since you'll be hosting the visiting friends (I'd be sure to say who they are since you say they know each other). Let her then offer (or not) to have them tag along.

They do not know each other. I think they would get along really well once they do meet. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I am actually trying to plan a house rental with a few families and planned to invite both families. It is just a matter of time until they meet. I don't necessarily think crashing the party is the best time to introduce them.

Re: How rude is it to bring a friend to a bday party?

Be honest... tell your friend that you have friends visiting that weekend and would love to attend the party, but you can't leave your friends.
Feel out the conversation and if she invites them then that's great.

I know you say they would get along, etc, but hosting a party it's not always easy to talk to everyone so they may not really get to know each other. You can always invite your friend over sometime that weekend to meet first too before the party so they are more comfortable together.

I had a similar situation recently. My brother, SIL and nephews were visiting from out of town and we were invited to a party (I am friendly with the mom). I declined the party and told her that I couldn't make it because they were in town and I felt bad leaving to a party while my nephews were there. The host graciously extended the offer to them as she had a lot of declines and was under her minimum and would need to pay for the amount anyway.

I would ask and explain the situation. These are close friends and its at a house. Idk to me if im hosting a party at my house it isnt a big deal if a close friend or family ask to bring someone else along. Especially, if its someone who is visiting out of town and they have no choice. I rather my friend/family member come than miss out.

I would appreciate some notice to make sure the child/guest has a favor.

I say A or D...I was hosting my Daughters B-day and my friend had relatives staying and I said they can come as well. If your good friends I don't think its rude to ask , its better then just having them show up.
