Nut allergy help...

Hi All,

My nephew was just diagnosed with a nut allergy (to pretty much all of them). He starts school soon and his parents are very concerned.

Any tips, articles or books you would recommend?

TIA!

Nut allergy help...

Two of my little cousins have nut allergies. Serious ones where they will die if they ingest nuts. My uncle made sure all of us (big family) know how to use the epi pen. He had a fake one and we each practiced to ensure god forbid we needed to use it. That's my only tip!

Re: Nut allergy help...

My granddaughter who will be 3 in Nov. was diagnosed in Jan. She is severely allergic to tree nuts. She had an anaphalactic reaction to the tiniest piece of walnut which she hadn't even swallowed. She is allergic to walnuts, pecans, cashews and pistachios but the allergist said to avoid ALL tree nuts because of cross contamination. You must read all labels and call companies because there are so many products that have nuts or are made on the same equipment with things with nuts that may be cross contaminated. There is a Food Allergy Awareness walk on Sun. Oct. 13 at Eisenhower Park. We are raising money to help do research, and hopefully someday find a cure for this. My daughter is on the committee. She has a facebook page called No Nuts Moms Group of Long Island. It's a support group, where you can ask questions, get ideas, etc. she is hoping that once the walk is over she can set up a date to have a meeting as a support group so everyone can get together and talk about this with people who are in similar situations. The allergist told my daughter that my granddaughter must avoid EVERYTHING from a bakery. She can't have bread, pies, cakes, muffins, cupcakes, NOTHING from a bakery because they make things with nuts and when nuts are roasted it gives off
something that can contaminate the other items. If your nephew and his family live on the island and they are on facebook, they can join that facebook page. Maybe my daughter and the others on there can help with any questions they might have. Have they been to an allergist? We're they prescribed an epi pen or auvi q?
