Here is the thing. My son does not have many friends yet.
He is not in school yet and the kids in my family are much older. My friends children are older as well, except for one couple who's youngest son is one year and a half older than my son.
This all being said, I feel it's not necessary to throw a big party. I was thinking of having a small get together at my home with my parents and my friends and their three children. I'd have some appetizers, cheese, crackers and cake and coffee.
On the other hand, I feel like I should be doing something bigger. Even though my son doesn't have many friends his age. I'm torn. Anyone in a situation like mine?
Please share what you did for your little one.
Thanks

we adopted my son when he was 21 months old. so for his 2nd birthday, he had only been with us for about 3 months. I was home with him, so he wasn't in school. We just had a party at our house for him. we have a big group of friends (my dh managed to stay friends with a lot of people from HS) so we had them, and our parents over. like about 20 people... I just got a sandwich tray from the grocery store, some chips/side salad type stuff, and a cake. DS and our friend's kids just played with the toys we had here for him... no creative party games or anything Chat Icon it was low key and fun for everybody Chat Icon
we're actually doing the same thing for his 3rd birthday coming up in November... even though he's in a part time nursery school program now. I'm saving the "big" parties for when I feel like he'll actually remember them. so I say go for simple!!

I made a bigger deal for my DD's first birthday but after that............every birthday we just have family over our house for chips, dips, pizza, cake, and cookies. Simple. She picks out here decorations for the party and is completely happy and excited every year. No need to make a big thing. As long as you make it special, no matter how small or simple, your LO will love it. Chat Icon

DS is in school with friends and we just did small family parties. I think at 2 - a big party is overwhelming to them and they don't get it.

no need for a huge bash.

I have 2 nephews and 1 niece and my dd#1 when she turned 2. They are all older. I took the 4 of them to build a bear then we had cake at my sisters house. we are out of state at the time. I just wanted to do a little something for her.

For her 3rd bday we split a party at my sisters again with my nephew whose bday is a week later. We just had my fam and her inlaws over for a few trays for dinner and cake.

DD has been happy so far with both. They do not feel or get gipped if not having a huge party at an expensive place.

We took our DS to White post his Bday & went for pizza afterwards with grandparents & our siblings. He loved his cone hat (bday hat) and that to him was the bday.

We always do a birthday place like a bounce place etc., which imo is not a " big deal" but that's bc we have a lot of young kids in the fam. If we only had one or two kids to invite, I'd do pizza and cake at my house. I personally enjoy having parties so I'm not with the whole " no need" thing and bc of our large family, it's just a lot easier on me to pay to do it at a place.

I seriously don't understand big 2nd (or 3rd) bday parties. The kid isn't going to remember it and would be just as happy with a small party at home. For DD's 2nd bday we decorated the house and had family over for pizza, salad and cake. DD loved it.

We *might* do a kids party for her 3rd but are considering waiting until her 4th. I think it's much more exciting and meaningful for them once they're old enough to remember and understand what's going on. I have seen many kids at their 2nd and 3rd bday parties that don't seem to have any clue that the party is for them.

ITA. My DD also doesn't have many friends and most of her cousins are older...none of my friends have kids yet. We threw a big 1st birthday with all of my cousins and their little kids. For her 2nd, we just did close friends & family. There was one other child there who was younger than Dd, but she still had a blast being the center of attention. We did a Minnie Mouse theme and she loved that too!

We did not do a party, my DD just turned 2, we did cupcakes and pizza in daycare and then the 3 of us spent the day together and we took her for a pony ride at the New York Equestrian Center in West Hempstead, she LOVED seeing the horses and riding the pony, it made her day! I highly recommed it. We are having our family over this weekend for pizza and cake.

My ds understood his birthday party at 2 and if they don't understand at 3, then something is wrong!

I dislike the " too young to remember" argument though in all of its applications. Experiences don't need to be relayed later on to have or prove an impact.

Ditto.

Re: My son is turning two years old soon. Not in school- not many friends - I need some Low key birthday party ideas?

I am in a similar situation.
dh and I have very small families... there are no young kids in our immediate families. I have only a couple of friends with kids.
dd is turning one in November... and I am throwing her a "big" party - but big for us, is inviting 50 people - not expecting them all to come - that includes adults and kids - and it includes our extended families and friends as well.

next year, I have no intention on inviting extended families again. it's still costing a lot of money. I will probably just do dinner or lunch and cake for immediate family and that be it.

i'm hoping that for her 3rd or 4th birthday she will have a few more little friends, and that it can be a small kids only party, and then just be immediate family for cake, like I had growing up. I do not have the money or energy to do "big" parties year after year.

I think what you are doing sounds perfectly fine. if you want it to be a little more "special" then maybe since there's a few kids, have a craft and a game or two for them to play. do party hats and noise makers, a couple of decorations, sing happy birthday - it will be plenty and your son will love it.

We had a big party for 1.

For 2 & 3 years old we just had immediate family (9 people including us) for cake and coffee.

At that age they don't realize its not a big party. They get excited about balloons and cake IMO.

Not a fan of over the top parties at this age. I grew up having parties in our yard with just my cousins, pizza and cake. We always had fun and I don't feel jilted because it wasn't at a party place with 50 people.

My DS turned 3 this month - we did exactly what we did last year, coffee and cake with just his grandmothers and my siblings and their family.

He has yet to turn around and ask me why we didn't celebrate his birthday at a party place and have loads of people, and over the top decorations.

He just turned to my and DH and said 'THANK YOU for my garbage truck cake, I love it!"

There is nothing wrong with DS because he didn't realize his party wasn't a 'party'.

DS will be 2 in March. DH has a huge family. DH is one of 4, FIL is one of 4 and MIL is one of 5. Most of DH' aunts and uncles live upstate. This year I think I am just inviting my parents, my in-laws. My aunt, uncle and cousins and then our friends. I am not inviting all of DH's extended family. It is way to many people. Last year for his 1st birthday we had all of these pple at my parents house since my house is a tiny cape. It is too much to have it every year with all of these people. We did the big first birthday and I feel it is fine to have a smaller party
