So DS is going to get an MMR shot AGAIN even though he already had one.

We went abroad this summer, so DS got an early MMR shot at 9 mo. We went back for his 1yr shots today and DR said he has to get another MMR again (the one they give between 12-15 mo) because the one DS got already " doesn't count" and CDC says all babies need get the MMR right after their first bday, btween 12 -15 mos.
So basically even though DS already got one dose he will still need to get all the MMR shots they way he would starting at 12 mo. He is getting a double dose (so to say)
Also because he is allergic to eggs (he had a reaction couple of times) will have to delay the MMR until 15 mo and we will have to hang around the dr's office for 3 hours after the shot, AND he can not get a flu shot at all. Not until he grows out of egg allergies . Which is scary because he got a flu at 6 weeks old and he was very sick, it was a very scary week. He had no reaction to the MMR and the flu shot previously , but this was before he developed allergies to eggs.
I am just so worried, angry and annoyed about this whole situation. Don't really know what to do .
We ended up giving him HIB and PCV13 today and were told to go back for MMR and Varicella at 15 mo.
Sorry if I'm all over the place, just got home and got 2 minutes to myself so wanted to post and get some feedback, advice...

I would get a second opinion.

I agree. I'm very pro-vaccinations but I would also get a second opinion before giving him a double dose.

I have heard that before (about it having to be on or after thir first bday) because it doesn't always provide long term immunity.

Personally I would request for his blood to be tested for immunity. If he is still covered from the shot at 9 months I wouldn't let the Dr give it to him.

Also, personally I wouldn't give the MMR and chicken pox vaccine at the same time regardless of the situation.

I am not a dr so I can't say about the MMR but the flu shot...do you have an allergist? I swore I read there was a flu shot this year for egg allergies (on the cdc site). Also I know children with egg allergies who get the shot with their allergist. If you feel strongly speak with your DC's allergist.

No ped should be giving the MMR prior to one year. You should look for a new ped ASAP.

Go on the cdc website all the information is there. It says if you are leaving the country it is recommended that the child receive the mmr before 12 months. However, will still need the 12-15 month dose. Possibly getting blood work to check immunity might be an option. You can always say no to the dr they cant give it unless you allow it.

I believe if you are allergic to eggs you cant get the flu shot unless something changed and they made one that was safe.

This is incorrect. It does appear they recommend 2 doses if the first is for 6 months-1 for international travel. See CDC sire for travel and vaccinations.

Interesting...is this a new recc? Because I was always told that the MMR was ineffective if given prior to one year. I know that my ped does not give the MMR prior to one year even for international travel. Have they proven otherwise?

Maybe the peds out here are out if date. When my girls were younger I know cornell recommended it. But that is probably why they recommend a second dose. You wouldn't want to give it before a year unless you were leaving the country. It is a travel recommendation.

I had the same type of situation but I waited until my dd turned 5 for the repeat shot. She was fine

when our ped first told us DS would need to get the MMR at 9 mo, before we left thecountry I called few PEDs and asked , they all recommended we give the shot , that's how it's done now. If you are leaving the country it is recommended a child gets MMR if they are older than 6 mo. But then they will need to get it again at 12-15 mo.
When we went in at 9 mo I did think our ped said we would need to give DS this shot again once he turns 12 mo, but I thought I misunderstood...
I'm not against vaccines or anything, I vaccinated my DD as we were supposed to and doing the same with DS, the only difference is that we seperate them for him because he seems more sensitive to certain shots. So this upsets me, who wants their child to get double the vaccine, know what I mean?
I'm going to callfew places tomorrow and make sure this is what we have to do. The only think I'm thinking I will bring him in for the Varicella shot at 15 mo and then MMR few weeks later or something. Will have to figure it out.

no , no allergist, yet. but thinking of seeing one now , just to discuss the whole thing .
DS doesn't seem to be allergic to anything else and egg allergies are pretty common in little ones ,he only has a reaction to scrambled eggs, not te egg yolk, not food with eggs in it, nothing, so I think he is allergic to eggwhite.
Most kids grow out of it by age 3 so we are hoping this will be the case with DS.

If you think you want it -there is no harm in speaking with a ped allergist. I thought I saw on one list a new egg free shot (not sure if it was for kids). I know people who have egg allergy kids who do the shot in the allergist office. I don't believe it is for everyone, but if you feel strongly about the shot it never hurts to talk to the allergist you do not have to go through witb it if it is not a good fit or you are nervous.

If it was me, I would do a titer test and if the blood test shows antibodies there should be no rush to get it. That seems awfully young for a double dose of MMR, also considering an allergy exists.
Again, if it was me, I'd definitely consult another pediatrician.

I would also question why they want to give the MMR and Varicella at the same time. My pediatrician would not give those two shots at the same time.

And you can refuse if your not comfortable with it. Just because its a peds doesnt mean he knows everything. And im noy saying question everything but it doesny make him and expert ay everything either.

If your child isnt in daycare you can postpone the mmr to anytime you want. you dont have to do anything right now. Or at 15 months if your not comfortable.
You are your childs spokesperson. You speak up to protect him and dont do anything without some research just because a dr says so.

In terms of giving the MMR and Chickenpox at the same time- my ped does that. I questioned it and asked if I shoudl seperate them and he said I could if I wanted to, but there really was no need. He said both were live viruses, both would build up in her body at the same rate, and both would give a reaction at the same time. I figured, why let her get through one then start all over again a month later.
So I gave both at the same time and it was fine. She had a fever on day 7- it lasted a day and a half and that was it.
Every ped is different but there is nothing wrong with getting both these shots at once.

Now in terms of giving the MMR again- I am very pro vaccine but that would make me a little leary.
They get bloodwork at 1 year old anyway, so I'd ask them to include an order for a titer on that bloodwork. If my LO still showed immunity for MMR- I'd wait
They get a booster again when they are a bit older I think- so I'd try to hold out until then if they still had immunity from getting it at 9 months.
To me, it seems a bit close to re-give the shot.

They did take blood, yesterday, just called them and waiting for the ped to call back so I can ask them to do the titer test and check the antibodies , if it's not too late.
If they can't do it I think I will do the Varicella at 15 mo and another MMR at 18 mo.

I would talk with your doctor and see if they can titer your son's blood to see if he got the necessary antibodies. I know for school's titers are sufficient proof to avoid vaccine's - it happens with chicken pox - kid gets chicken pox then they use a titer to prove antibodies
