Anyone have example wording/email they used to tell the boss about pumping?
I'm returning to a new position, to a new supervisor that I don't know very well (he's a sweet, older man) and I don't know how to approach him about leaving my desk a couple of times a day to go pump. There is a nurse's office to go do it in, so there isn't a request to set something up for me. I just don't know what words to use to make it less awkward?

I would just say as you know I have a X month old and I am nursing her. I wanted you to be aware that I'll need to leave my desk X amount of times each day for X amount of minutes to pump for LO. See how he responds.

As you probably know, I am a nursing mother to a XX month old, and I need to take time during the day to pump milk for her. I will need to leave my desk at approximately __ am, __ am and __ pm for this purpose, for approximately __ minutes each time.

I should add that I work with three male partners in a law firm. I discussed it with them in person. When I started with the firm, I had a 6 mo. I just said, sort of matter of factly, I have a 6 month old, and I will need to pump milk during the day. Please don't come into my office if the door is closed.
When I came back to work with DS2, I reminded them (again, in person) that I needed to pump during the day.
Both times, I think they were so embarrassed to be talking about pumping that they were like, "oh ok..." Also, I know that one partner has a daughter who also pumps during the day. So that helps. Your new boss may be more familiar with the subject than you think!
I am a blusher, so I know that I was bright red during all those conversations!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a female boss and I told her already I plan on pumping.
However my entire team is male, so when I return from mat leave I plan on just sending out and email saying if my office door is closed please call or email me, I will be pumping periodically thru the day.
My office has a lock so hopefully I don't forget!

I never actually has to send an e-mail. My (female) boss and I discussed I was nursing DS while I was on maternity leave and I would continue it when I returned. They understood my stepping away from my desk 3x a day.

I'm not returning to work until the beginning of November but briefly spoke with my supervisor today about this, among other matters. I was just very matter of fact. It may not be the easiest conversation but we're all adults and I'd rather ust be upfront about it.
Is there a particular reason you're emailing and not just talking about it?

I just told my boss I'm going to pump every 3hrs and I put it on my calendar as a meeting.

Yes, it is totally awkward! Plus, if you are not going to be seeing this person before you go back, an e-mail or phone call makes the most sense. I wouldn't make a special trip to talk about it!
