Spitting Up and Burping

DD has been spitting up milk quite a bit over the past two days. I spoke to one of the drs at her pediatrician's office and she told me to BF DD for only 20 minutes on the first boob and basically see how long she will go at the second boob.

She told me DD is likely getting air as she feeds and that I need to burp her for 30-45 mins in an upright position, basically at a 90 degree angle, when she's done eating (or possibly in between boobs). My issue is that DD is not a good burper at all and will not sit up for me to burp her. I put her on my chest or shoulder or sit her in my lap at a 90 degree angle and she squirms and starts wailing. I can't get her to sit still for barely two minutes to burp her let alone a half hour plus!

What do I do?

I'm totally with you!! I have no idea. Thirty minutes, I can't imagine him tolerating that--after 10 seconds, he starts freaking out & pulling back. Not to mention I don't think I'm very good at the burping thing. Also he burps with his mouth closed-- what good is that?! Mine is gassy & has been spitting up more lately too. I feel like he wheezes when he breathes & I wonder if it has to do with that. I have no idea what to tell you but I have the same problem!!

So frustrating right!! DD definitely has been having more gas too. Going to ask the pediatrician about gas drops at next week's visit.

Honestly, I think spitting up is pretty normal. DD did it more some weeks than others. Sometimes it looked like a lot but when I compared it to what a few ounces in a bottle would look like it was nothing. I wouldn't worry too much. As far as burping, my LC said that bf babies take in very little air and not to stress much about it. DD would burp easily but if she didn't I let her be. And I never bothered to burp her during the night. If she seems uncomfortable from gas, then I would be more worried about it. You can try a bouncy or rnp after she eats to keep her more upright. I don't really see what limiting how long she feeds on the first side would do?

My DS had acid reflux and spat up like craaaaaazy and didn't stop spitting up until 10-11 months and still does on occasion when he laughs too much and/or gets the hiccups... and he's 12 months old. My ped's office told me not to lay him down for 30 minutes after a feed but they didn't tell me to burp him for 30 minutes - that seems insane to me. But I did need to burp him until I got something up and whenever he was fussy for burping I'd put him on my shoulder/chest and walk him around until something came up.

DS is a pretty good burper most of the time but sometimes he just refuses. my ped said the same thing, to keep him upright for awhile, but she didn't specify 30 minutes. i usually just hold him on my chest for a bit or i put him in the bouncy or RNP so that he's on an incline. i actually find that the bouncy makes him burp b/c it vibrates lol.

DD went through a stage of increased spit up, she too hates being burped. The best thing that worked was to have her on my shoulder and walking slowly for a couple of minutes, then sit down with her still upright, and slightly sway. It worked and she let me burp her.

Spitting up is totally normal! Babies have immature digestive systems so you just kind of have to let the baby grow out of it. Try to burp the baby in between feeding and at the end so that when you put her down, she isn't uncomfortable. But there isn't too much you can do about the spitting up. DS was a champ at spitting up. It only started to get better around 6 months, but he's still spitting up at times and he's 7 months now.
