My oldest was evaluated 3 years ago with an agency that gets glowing reviews here.

Now my youngest is going to he evaluated too. Older child didnt qualify and I doubt my youngest will either

I met with person in Hauppauge to open the case and said I would like to use same practice again. I felt she wasn't happy with my choice and tried to steer me to others. Son doesn't have some huge problem that needs a certain specialized place .. So what's the big deal? I could tell she was trying to steer me away from place I used previously and was very happy with.

I told her my official decision the next day and once again it seemed like she was making me doubt my choice. I was rushing to get ready for work while on phone and she asked me why there was hesitation in my voice about the place I picked. I said there wasn't.

What is this?? Is this normal ? This place gets great reviews on here and honestly I trust other parents more sometimes. Do they get any sort of kick back if I went with one of her reccs?

I'm just annoyed because if there was something wrong with this place or she felt another place would be better for X reason, then just say it. Don't make me think I'm making some huge mistake.

Has anyone experienced this?? Maybe I shouldn't feel annoyed. I don't know.

She sounded annoyed with me for picking this place ... That's why I'm miffed.

That's very strange. Did you flat out ask why she was trying to steer you elsewhere? I didn't have the first clue who to pick and was happy to have some guidance. The coordinator rattled off a bunch of agencies that do private therapy in case DD didn't quality so I just picked the last one she said. She then steered me to a specific one and I agreed. Her reasoning was that she knew the evaluator would give me suggestions, follow up with me, reevaluate DD sooner. I think from what she saw of DD she didn't think we would qualify so all that sounded great to me. We ended up qualifying and I was a little surprised that the agency recommended their own person to do the therapy. This time I was ready with suggestions and assumed I probably couldn't use the same agency. They didn't really ask who I wanted, just had their own person in mind and asked if I was okay with that. It was fine with me and has been great but I still find it a little strange. I'm curious who they did/didn't want you to use if you want to fm me.

I went through the EI process in May and June. I remember being in the office and the woman just handed me a list of evaluators to choose from. She told me which ones they recommend but I ended up going with a different one beause a friend had used them. Honestly, she didn't seem to care who I chose. Maybe you dealt with someone else.

I did ask her if she was steering me to other places because she felt they would be better for DS but she danced around it kind of and said DS doesn't present something major where he would need anyone special but she reinforced these places were great, but not better per se.

I could see steering me if my kid had some major concerns but he doesn't. I doubt he will even qualify and this all sounds like a waste of time to me but I'm doing it anyway.

I had left telling her il think about it and pick a place. I thought it over and the place she pushed most is in Nassau I think. I'm in eastern Suffolk. Plus I really loved this place I used previously. They were so great and I was very impressed with them. I have recc'd them to other moms myself.

If he does qualify I may want to take him to the place instead of doing it at my home and Nassau is too far for me.

I'm just annoyed that she seemed annoyed when I told her my official decision. She even had a tone when she asked me why I'm picking this place after thinking it over and if there are any reasons why I want this place. I again explained I used them before and was happy. That's when she asked why there was "hesitation" in my voice (there wasnt. I was distracted).

I used EI twice in Suffolk for DS. Both times I was handed a list of agencies and told that I need to choose 1. The first time, I was told her top 3 reccomendations, but she could not provide me with any preference. The 2nd time, I was just handed the list. I did not choose the same agency as it was different issues.

For our coordinator after we were approved for service, I chose the woman who did the initial eval, feeling that she already knew my son/situation. That was the suggestion of the EI coord.

I like straight shooters. Don't make me read between the lines kwim? But maybe she couldn't tell me. Idk.

I'm happy with my choice .. Just find her reaction strange.

Can you PM who your service coordinator is? I'm in the process of switching from Nassau EI to Suffolk and am curious if the coordinator I've been assigned is the same.

FWIW I dealt with EI in Nassau and they didn't push an agency on me at all. I knew who I wanted to use before walking in. I don't think they get anything out of it. Maybe she has a personal friend at that agency or something though. Very strange, but def not the norm.

The person may have been trying to steer you one way because some of the agencies are easier to work with (for the county people) than others. She really shouldn't have been acting like that but not telling you why. You have a right to choose any agency you want on the list.
