Quick question about supplementing while breastfeeding.
DD is just a few weeks old and at night she can be awake for almost 2 hours nursing...obviously it is killing me!! I am so exhausted. My question is, if I give her one bottle of formula at say 12 am do I really have to pump?? I so don't want to, I just want to sleep. I figure she will maybe sleep for 4 hours and I will nurse her then. I EBF during the day every 2 hours so far.

Why dont u pump what you would give her at night & put in bottle? I pump exclusivity & its a lot easier & takes less time then if I nursed her.

You do NOT have to pump - but it may change your supply.

Re: Quick question about supplementing while breastfeeding.
DS is 3 weeks old and we have a BF schedule of every 2-3 hours most of the day and night but we supplement with formula at 11:30p.m. and I pump at that time while DH gives the bottle. DS will then sleep for about 4 hours straight so this is when I sleep too. I start BF again around 3:30-4 a.m....this routine has not affected my supply as far as I can tell. I try to get him back to sleep after the early a.m. feeding so I can get another hour of sleep. I'm operating on about 5 hours of sleep broken up.

Re: Quick question about supplementing while breastfeeding.
If you do not pump or feed during that time frame your body will adjust the required milk supply.

Re: Quick question about supplementing while breastfeeding.
how many weeks pp are you? your supply is still regulating for the first 12 weeks. i wouldn't do anything to mess with it at that point.

Also no guarantee that she will stay asleep for 4 hours after the bottle feeding. And those first fiew days you will probably find yourself engorged or leaking. If DS sleeps through the night (which is rare) I wake up so full and usually leaking.

thanks ladies, I tried giving her a bottle last night and it was a no go!! She would not take it. However, she nursed for a long time around 11ish and then went on to have a very good night. Soooo, I am going to try to EBF for now!
