When to look for a nanny?

I will need a nanny starting January 1st. When do you think a good time to start looking is?

I will need a Nanny around 2/1 - we are planning to start looking 2 months out. I have had friends say 4 weeks, but I think with the holidays I will need more of a cushion.

Most nannies want to start right away unless they are currently in a job that's ending. Otherwise, they will usually only wait about 2 week to start a job, or the good ones will find another one that starts sooner.

Thank you ladies. With daycare i know the wait lists are nuts...so i wanted to make sure i left enough time to find a good nanny.

Poster in hiding here Chat Icon where are you looking for a nanny/care? I heard of Care.com but not much else and we only need PT. Nervous a few months won't be enough time to find someone.

Everyone keeps telling me care.com, and sittercity.
Im trying to hire a friend of the family or get a referral. But it is tough!

Daycare waiting lists aren't always that bad. Sometimes I think they trump it up to make you more urgent about making a decision.

I don't have nanny searching experience but in terms of searching for daycares, we did that after DS was born while I was on maternity leave -- some weeks before we actually had to start though. I wanted to get a sense of how they responded to DS when we would bring him into the sites.
