Godparents - When and How?

When and how did you ask those you picked for your godparents?

Before or After the baby was born?
Any special ways?

I know one person who asked after the baby was born and my friend will be doing the same thing. Will ask after the baby is born.

For myself (when the time comes), Im not going to be able to wait.......Id be so excited to ask someone.......Id probably ask them ASAP!

That's what I'm trying to decide. I'd love for them to know in advanced..but I don't know if this will jinx them.

i think i'm going to ask a couple of weeks before the baby is born. I would like them to know that they are the baby's godparents right from the start.

We're waiting. One baby will be named after my side, and one after DH's (so we will choose the Godparents accordingly)...probably at the hospital when they come to visit for the first time.

We already picked the GodParents for our baby boy. They just don't know it yet. We will wait after the baby is born to let them know. I know they will be thrilled to do so.

I have one sister and she knows she is the Godmother. I have two brothers and they don't know which one we chose yet. But, the one we didn't choose, his name will be the middle name.

I have no idea who to pick. I am close to my 6 brothers and sisters, but not all of them are practicing Catholics. I feel like I need to pick a CAtholic sincd DH is not Catholic, I want to give him the chance to pick the non Catholic, if the situation allows.

DH wants it to be his brother, since we are both his kids godparents. So I guess I will pick one of my sisters. I kind of just want to pick a name out of a hat.

I know exactly who I am picking and I am sure the godmother knows its going to be her..LOL. We also know for the godfather but we may wait.

I was asked to be godmother before my godson was born. I think pretty early on actually.

When the time comes and I am pregnant we already know who the godparents would be so we would probably ask them right away.

we honestly do not know who we will be picking to be godparents..

We will be baptizing in the Greek Orthodox faith, so that eliminates most of my family/friends.. and on DH's side, there are only a few close relatives that practice the GO religion..

SO this is our dilemma. But I'm sure it'll work out. Even if we did know who we were choosing, we would not be asking them until after the baby was born -

We're not going to name godparents- we can't without hurting/offending people. I'm sure DH's twin brother assumes he will be the godfather, but we HATE his wife and will never allow her to have anything to do with raising our children. I know that sounds harsh, but I'm 27 weeks pregnant and she's yet to even acknowledge the fact that I'm having a baby. And needless to say, she has already replied "no" to my baby shower. I would love to name my sister the godmother, but she's already a single mom and she has some serious health issues, so she's out.
We're planning on asking DH's younger sister to be the guardian, but it will be done privately.

We're asking them after the baby's born. We're pretty sure we already know who we're picking (my sister and DH's brother). I don't think we'll ask them in any special way. We will probably just ask them on the phone since we live far away.

I asked my sister and her husband over for dinner one night (i think i was 30 weeks) and asked them if they would be my daughters god parents. They were soo happy!!

I'm assuming that my brother and his wife know that I will ask them since my DH is an only child. I just haven't officially asked yet. I haven't decided if I'm going to ask them before or after I give birth yet.

We will ask them when they come visit the baby for the first time.

We are asking two different people (a couple) to be our child's (and any future children's) legal guardian though.

We asked my sister and BIL to be godparents less than one month before our daughter was born.

We invited them over for dinner and i gave my sister flowers.

My friend was in the room when I gave birth, I planned on asking her when she held the baby for the first time,,,,but there was so much going on in the room and she left so DH and I could spend time with DS so I asked her when she came back to visit us that night

godparents are NOT legal guardians..that is a very different thing. A godparent is someone who promises to help raise your child in Faith. They have NO legal standing if something were to happen to you and DH (GOD forbid!)
You can ask your DH brother to be a godfather and not ask his wife to be a godmother. That happens all the time.

I asked my best friend when I was in my 2nd trimester on mother's day with a card. We asked my BIL (Scott's brother) to be a godfather during my 3rd trimester.
WIth the adoption we are waiting until we get "the big call" until we ask anyone.

In regards to legal guardians this is a very private discussion and only our wills and those people will know about that arrangement.
