Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution? It provides alternatives to cio that might be helpful to you.

Re: I can't do this any more, should I just let DS cry when he wakes up in the middleof the night?
So last night I deided no more pacifier, because I think that's part of the problem. After crying and fighting he finally fell asleep in my arms. He actually slept from 10-3:30 am without waking up once, but then my DD woke up and woke him up, after that he was up till 5 am, I tried getting him back to sleep without a pacifier but no luck, then my DH gave him a pacifier because he felt bad and DS fell alseep, he dropped the pacifier asa he was asleep and he is still sleeping . Now it's clear to me that the main part of the problem is the pacifier and if I can get him to drop it he will sleep TTN. (I couldn't even let him cry for a pacifier in the crib, I held him, sang to him, rocked him and finally... So CIO is out of question, I just can't do it )
To answer one of the poster's Q no we are not co sleeping or sharing a bed, he sleeps in his crib, has been since he was 4 mo. Once in a whole he'll sleep in a PP in our bedroom.

The paci is a personal decision, but don't let that holding and cuddling become a habit... You dont want your ds getting used to that and then you still won't be getting sleep! I think it's ok when they are not feeling well, but he will never learn to self soothe if you continue to pick him up and have him fall asleep in your arms. JMO

I could not let an infant cry. They are crying for a reason. Not all babies are created equally either. This expectation that all babies should sleep uninterrupted is just baffling to me.
If it is any consolation, I have not had a solid night of rest in five years. I have three children. Its just part of the job for me.
Don't let anyone make you feel bad about not letting your child cry it out. Trust your mommy instinct-it is usually right!
This is my sentiment as well. I can't let my child cry it out for sleeping.. tantrums, now that's a different story.

It's a completely personal decision. When he started waking up, a bad habit may have formed with the eating. My ped said once DD started STTN that if she woke up not to feed her because it wasn't out of hunger. Six months is not too young to let him cry, but again, it's a personal decision. I find that when I go in to soothe DD, it just makes it worse. Granted, she is now 20 months old, but it's always been that way.

I'm sorry buy I don't agree with this at all. I think you should make that holding a habit! Your son sounds like he has been needing a little extra attention, and if holding helps him then so be it! He did sleep for a while until he was woken up! I personally think 6 months is young for cry it out...he could be in pain from teething or something else. If he is still having a hard time closer to 1 then i would maybe consider ferber method. I think sometimes we all forget they are just babies! When they cry its not to be difficult, its because something is wrong and thats how they communicate with us. Maybe you could look into a co sleeper....that way you can just reach over and rub his back..or slide him over to nurse.

I agree.
I don't believe in CIO - it is not for me.
I also don't believe in not holding them when they are crying or not sleeping or learning how to self soothe. I don't believe you can spoil them from holding them too much.
These are precious times that you will never get back, I say hold them and comfort them.

i agree. honestly, i always did what was emotionally comfortable to me.
i didnt really do CIO till they were toddlers, like maybe around 14/15months. and even then, i did a modified CIO and really stretched out. now he sleeps in his crib through the night. my dd sleeps in her bed the whole night too.
i personally wouldnt let them CIO before one year old. there could be so many different things going on, teething, feeling sick, needing comfort. but thats just me. i feel like this time goes so fast, so i enjoy coddling them and comforting them.

Re: I can't do this any more, should I just let DS cry when he wakes up in the middleof the night?
We did progressive CIO.
Let her cry for 3 mins, go in and soothe, let her cry for 5 mins, go in and soothe, let her cry for 7 mins, go in and soothe, let her cry for 10, 10, 10, 10, etc.
It worked like a charm after 3 nights.
Now if she wakes, I'll let her cry for 20 and she usually soothes herself back to sleep.
There are times though when her cry is different and she just needs to be held. So I go in and we cuddle for an hour or two.
Go with your gut. If this isn't working for you, try the progressive method.
Since you go in you'll feel like less of a monster than just letting him straight CIO.
It's in a pinned post at the top of page 1.
Good luck momma!
