5/6mos with a straw sippy. He just played with it for a long time. Then eventually learned to suck, but spit the water out. (7/8mos). Then at 11mos he was getting sippies with every meal and snack.

Re: when do you start

we offered it at 6 months with every meal, and the learning curve was steep for my DD but DS got the hang of it pretty quickly (first sucking it out and spitting it everywhere). At 10 months, they are good to go, do fine when we switch to different cups or straws (that freaked them out at first like if a straw was wider or a different firmness). Now they get it with meals, snacks, and a sip or two after they wake up.

I started offering it at 6 months. He took a long time to get the hang of it. For months he just banged it around and splashed water everywhere. He started to get it at around 10 months. Now he's 11 months and he drinks from it at every meal and loves it.

Re: when do you start

We started with the straw cup at 6 months. After a couple of weeks, DD was starting to sip from it, but then she was diagnosed with a swallowing disorder, and her feeding therapist didn't want us putting water or juice (which would have to be thickened) in her cup because she didn't want us using the thickener until after she was 1, and she said if she had juice or water in the cup it would be harder for her to drink milk from it.

Well, fast forward a couple of months, and we started trying using the cup with water and the thickener because DD is interested, and her pediatrician said it was fine to use the thickener at this age. She starts sipping on it, but doesn't take much yet. She's resisting a lot of eating and drinking right now though.
