anyone use an aupair for childcare?

I am not a parent yet, but thinking to the (hopefully) near future and wondering abut childcare options. Has anyone ever used an aupair? Thanks..

I know someone who uses one as well. She's a live in and they pay her $220/week. They are very happy with her.

ETA: I don't use day care, but I believe this is cheaper. If you have the room in your house, it sounds like a good option.

Re: anyone use an aupair for childcare?

My friends are getting one from Germany in a few weeks. Last year they had a nanny. They said the au pair was more expensive because they had to add her to their car insurance, pay for her cell phone, set up their extra bedroom with a phone & TV, get another bed & bedding, etc. Also, they will have to pay her all year long and my friend is a teacher with summers off. However, they're really looking forward to it because their two children (ages 4 & 9 months) are bilingual. They used a reputable agency in Jersey.
