Transition to Pre-K or K

DS has attended the same daycare since he was 14 weeks old. He will be 4 in August. We may enroll him into the town Pre-k because it is significantly less expensive than daycare, and with twins on the way it would help a lot. Anyway, at daycare he keeps seeing the 4 year old classroom that his friends went into because they are older, and he is looking forward to being in "the big boy classroom" come August. But he may not be going there...but to a different school, the pre-k at the elementary school.

Just curious, how was the transition for anyone whose kids have been through this? Were the first few days rough? He is so used to his little friends and teachers at daycare that I worry about him being sad or overwhelmed. It even makes me want to spend the extra $ to keep him in daycare lol.

I think it will be tougher on you than them. I dealt with the same thing with DS. He went on daycare full time like 10 hours to 3 hours and going on the bus. Going on the bus was the toughest. First day he really cried bc he had no clue what as going on.
Remember they are all starting the same time and just as nervous, but your DS has the upper hand bc he's used to a class schedule and being away from mommy. Most of the other kids aren't. They'll all make friends, learn new songs, dances, etc.
Believe me I wanted to cry when DS went from a loving daycare environment where they not only learned, but we're a little babied. You know getting hugs and sitting on the teachers laps who really young girls or assistants. Now it's a school with teachers with master degrees. No hugging or laps. I thought it sounded sooo cold. Lol
I was wrong. They don't do the babied stuff they got and the toys, but they are just as loved and will learn a lot.

I'm also excited to know that in years from now how cute it will be to see DS and his friends in class all grow together bc they're in the same class for years. Also joining sports, etc.

Thank you Erica that does make me feel better :) Yes I know what you mean right now he is so loved and cuddled and babied at daycare....and I feel like I am just tossing him into a harsh elementary school environment LOL.....I am very sensitive and I am sure I will be crying for weeks and he will probably be ok after a few days
