IMO Christenings are family events and kids should not be excluded. After all the guest of honor is a kid :)
We had an area the kids could play in and bought coloring books, paper, and crayons and stickers for them to entertain themselves a little. They could also run around in that area. They weren't running through the table area.

I agree with pps.
We had a large number of kids (I think around 40) so we got a DJ. I used to waitress at a catering hall and the craft area/area to run was popular and successful as well.

For a Christening I woudl invite kids. I would not however go out of my way to entertain the kids or get entertainment for them. As a parent it is my responsibility to make sure my kids are ok.

ITA. My sister just had a christening at a hall for my nephew. the kids ran around and they played an ipod in the background, they entertained themselves.

It's an event for a child and I think children should be invited. For my DC christenings I set up a large kids' table with coloring books, goodie bags, easy arts n crafts etc to keep them busy for a while. The kids had a great time playing with each other and stayed out of their parents way mostly. I really don't think entertainment is necessary

We invited everyone's kids to our DD's Christening and she's ALWAYS been invited to others we've gone too. (bith friends and family)
Honestly, I would be less inclined to attend if she wasn't invited. I feel like kids should be a part of it too, that's how we do it in our family. 
ETA - We had a lot of kids at my DD's and we didn't hire entertainment. I set up one table and had all kinds of crafts, coloring, books, and little games for the kids to play with. They loved it and it kept them busy. You can get lots of goodies in the dollar section at Target. I let the kids take home anything they wanted at the end.

We had DD's christening at a hall and had about 20 kids. It was great they all played together. We hired some to make balloons and do face painting. DS who is 3 had the best time!

I had nearly as many kids as I did adults at my kids' christenings. It was great! They dominated the dance floor and everyone had a great time.
I couldn't imagine having a christening without inviting all the kids.
