RAST allergy test
How is this analyzed? I know there is a high chance of false positives and rarely a false negative. I'm curious because we did the RAST test for DD and she showed positive for everything. And the dr. I spoke to (not her dr.) said maybe you because you ate things while you breastfed her? w.t.h???
I made a follow up for next week... so hopefully I can get some clear answers.

 Did they compare it to the positive and negative test prick? Some people have sensitive skin and that is why they do a negative prick so that they can compare it to that. So if you have sensitive skin the negative prick might get a little red (does in my girls) then a positive reaction would be bigger than the negative one. Also has your DC had hives, you are supposed to wait 30 days after having hives before prick testing or a big allergic reaction. Otherwise you can get false positives.
The prick testing is more accurate than the blood work which gives false negatives. But there are times you cannot do the skin testing so instead they have to do the blood work.
Also my allergist prefers when testing milk, fruit, vegetables to use the actual foods over the vials bc he has found them more accurate.
Btw sounds like you need a new allergist.

I spoke to NP.. and I told her half the stuff on that list she showed up positive for my DD eats on a daily basis. She told me to do a component testing and take it from there.
Let me see how this goes, and I do think I need a new specialist. I can't believe the other doc and his stupid BF comment.

I don't know I never deal with NPs only with MDs. I have a good allergist both my girls use if you are in nassau.
It is true that you can be allergic to an item but still eat it. When cooked proteins change so someone with a minor allergy could eat say cooked veggies but not raw. My DD is allergic to milk but can recently eat things baked with milk like a cookie, but can't eat cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream or drink milk.
Were you told they were severe?
BTW my allergist didn't test until 3 said the tests were not as reliable so he only tests younger than that if there is a suspected severe allergy.

DD broke out into hives last month, just randomly and I took her to the allergy specialist. Couple of days ago, her lower lip on one side blew up and I thought it was a reaction (but she bumped her lip on one side and she kept chewing it so it was just sore) and I panicked and called the office to get the results.
On the RAST scale the shellfish and peanut popped up higher than the rest.. it was elevated enough for them to tell me not feed her a peanut butter sandwich (and she's never had any peanut/shellfish products, though we eat this stuff around her).
I'm thinking I jumped the gun with the tests and probably should have waited until she was older but we wanted to get to the cause of hives. We are scheduled for a component testing next week.. just to see why this happend?

My older DD had hives did they test her to make sure it was not viral? Did they test for thyroid, liver or kidneys. There are a few conditions that can cause hivesnot related to allergies or food.
We had to put DD on an elimination diet to get rid of hers.
He does adults and kids but my ped recommended him to me saying he is very good. I know several people whose kids use him. He called us every 3-5 days when she was doing the elimination diet for weeks. He has been in NY Mag best doctors in NY.

365-6077He is in Manhasset on Northen across from Macys. I saw another allergist who put DD on a huge dose of meds but then didn't want to allergy test her despite telling me he ruled out it being viral bc in most cases you never figure out the cause of hives.
My DD had a severe case in her eyelashes, eyelids etc, plus a verybswollen face.

thank you!
They didn't do anything other testing.. and we just had her 15 month appt as well. I'm going to speak to her dr. on Monday and if his answers seem bland, then I will call the dr. you recommended.
Our dr. rated pretty high too.. I'm just a mess talking to their office..
