Water for hiccups?

My 2 month old dd gets the hiccups frequently, which I understand is common in newborns. However, she screams and cries with the hiccups. I was giving her gripe water in a syringe, which stopped the hiccups immediately. That got me thinking that maybe it's more the sucking/swallowing action than the actual ingredients that are in the gripe water. I hate the idea of giving her something that's not FDA approved.

The next day, I gave her 2mL's (which is less than half a teaspoon) of water in the syringe, and it stopped the hiccups! I've done it about 3 other times since, with the same success. ONLY when she was screaming over the hiccups.

I've only had to do this about 4 times in the past week. I know the dangers of giving newborns water. This is such a tiny trace amount.

Do you think this is okay? I tried to ask my dd's pediatrician, but I don't think she understood what I was doing and just kept telling me that hiccups were normal and painless.

i think it's fine as long as it's only a little bit and not too often.

We make formula with water so it's not like water is dangerous or anything

You're just supposed to stay away because if DC has water, she won't be hungry for "real" food and therefore won't be getting the nutrition she's supposed to. So yeah, as long as it's a little bit, i'd think it's not a problem at all.

But obviously see what your doctor says ... what the heck do i know

IDK about water, but have you tried just a pacifier? That works for my DD (sometimes).

I have done it with my DD and it works most of the time. the paci alone doesnt. I give her a nipple full maybe once or twice a day.

I always give gripe water for hiccups. Ped said it was fine.
