Pros and Cons of Clomid

I will be starting clomid this cycle. I ovulate every month regularly but the RE suspects my issue is egg quality so she wants to do a medicated IUI. Just got AF today and will get the prescription on weds. What are the pros and cons to this med? She mentioned headaches and mood swings but are they really that common?

I took pretty high doses of Clomid, I never had any side effects. I always took it before bed so that may have helped. Good luck!!! Chat Icon

Re: Pros and Cons of Clomid

Pros: It could be an easy way to produce a good number of follicles.

Cons: It can create problems with implantation because it's an estrogen-inhibitor and thins the lining. I can also say from experience that Clomid cycles are not at all indicative of how you would respond to the IVF stims. Only an injectable cycle can really tell you that.

I never really had any side effects beyond lining problems.

Same here. At one time I was up to 200 mg. I did noticed a hot flash every once in awhile, but that was it. As PP said taking them at night helped.

Re: Pros and Cons of Clomid

I have never been a medicine lover so this is really tough for me. I was looking it up on the internet (big mistake lol) and the researched potential side effects on the fetus scare me. DH wants me to do it but I'm thinking maybe unmedicated IUI this cycle. I'm really stuck with this decision! Am I being paranoid??? :(

Pros and Cons of Clomid

Clomid is really the "mildest" of the fertility medicines, so do not be scared. That is where almost everyone starts. I'm starting clomid for the 3rd time (1st - 18mo DS, 2nd -miscarriage).

As PP said, I take it at night so I do not really notice any side effects.

Don't let google scare you! It's really not a big deal and I felt no side effects from being on it. An unmedicated cycle really doesn't up your chances so I would go with the clomid. GL!

Pros and Cons of Clomid

I took clomid for 4 cycles. Two months I took it around lunch and 2 months I took it at night and besides a very occasional hot flash, I didn't have any side effects either.

Is it norm to be on it for only 3 days? I hope this is me! I don't want to be on it for long at all!

Pros and Cons of Clomid

I think usually it's for 5 days. Some doctors prescribe it cd3-cd7 and others cd5-cd9.

I've taken Clomid for 9 cycles-150mg each time and got pregnant 4 times (2 surviving children, 1 was a t18 and I had a D&E early January). I took it for 5 days each time and had no issues at all.
Like a pp said, don't let google scare you! You'll be ok! Good luck!

Pros and Cons of Clomid

I've taken Clomid twice. 1st cycle 100 mg cd 3-7, produced nothing, so we did a second dosage of 100mg mid cycle cd 18-22 and only ended up with a 14.5mm follicle. Cycle was scrapped. I didn't have any side effects whatsoever on that dosage.

This time around I started 200mg cd 3-7, and went for monitoring on cd 12 and had 2 nice size follicles. I go back tomorrow at cd 18 to see what's next. This cycle I had horrible hot flashes, and was very moody.

Re: Pros and Cons of Clomid

I took 100mg cd 3-7 for a total of 4 months I had to skip 2 months in between bc of a cyst that wouldn't go away.

My side effects were mainly hot flashes (Quite a bot of them) and mood swings. After my 2nd round with them, my lining started to thin from it and has to take estrogen as well to help thicken it back up for implantation.
