WWYD - allowing toddler visitor
My son is just over 2 weeks old, so he hasn't had any of his vaccinations yet. One of my friends just emailed me that she wants to visit us - which is fine. BUT, she'd be bringing her 16 month old daughter. I obviously wouldn't let her daughter touch my son, but is it too dangerous to even let them visit? I'm pretty cautious with my son, but at the same time, being home alone and stuck inside every day is monotonous and I'd love the company for a bit. WWYD?

Has the other child had all their shots? As long as you stress that the child cannot be even possibly sick, then I don't see why not....I think people are a bit too cautious these days!

Given that we are still in the peak of flu season, I'd ask if you could push back their visit a few weeks. It's not worth the chance IMO.

Re: WWYD - allowing toddler visitor
It really doesn't matter whether the toddler got his shots. Even a common cold or upper respiratory infection could land a newborn in the hospital. Never mind the flu, or that stomach bug that's going around. I would try to postpone for a bit.

I was pretty laid back, but I avoided contact with kids for the first month or two (which is why I haven't even asked about coming over. I will have to find time when DH can stay with DD. )

Re: WWYD - allowing toddler visitor
We told people not to visit with their kids in the beginning. Some had to cancel. Some totally understood. Some didnt. One had the nerve to bring her sneezing 4yo to the hospital after being told not to. Whether they like it or not, it was doctors oders. I keep reading about the flu and rsv in newborns and I feel confident in my decision.

As long as the kid was not sick with a cold I'd be fine. Vaccines do not protect from the common illnesses so even if your DS was 8 weeks and had shots they are still at risk for the common cold etc.

Re: WWYD - allowing toddler visitor
Depends on the toddler. Is the child in daycare? That was a deal breaker for me. Shots or no shots, kids in daycare or school are exposed to a lot more germs, and I didn't think it was a good idea for them to be around my nb for the first several weeks.

:)
No kids. Too early. Even healthy looking kids can be brewing colds.

Re: WWYD - allowing toddler visitor
Depends on the kid and the parent. If its someone that you know that would call you or let you know if their child has as little as a sniffle, then i would trust that they woudlnt intentionally bring germs around your child.
But if its someone who after being at your house for an hour says oh yeah my DS has strep and pink eye, but he's been on meds for almost 24 hours, then I wouldn't have them over.
Personally, we already have kids in our home so we already have all the germs being brought into the house but anyone else who comes over, kids arent allowed near my child in the first few weeks. And after that, it depends on the kid and the parent. I dont like to expose people to my kids germs and I hope people dont expose us to their kids germs. In our house, you respect that, or you just don't get invited back :)

At 2 weeks, I wouldn't chance it. I didn't even introduce my DD to her cousins until 6 weeks. I'd push the visit off for a few more weeks. Congrats on your LO!

I agree. We had visitors for DS 1 with kids early on - kids that age pretty much just looked at him and did their own thing. We didn't let them touch/hold DS.
I was more worried about what DH could potentially bring home. He's in the FDNY and sleeps at the firehouse a couple of times a week and who knows what germs the other people bring in form their kids.
For DS 2 we took the same approach but, we also had DS 1 in the picture -who brought us all home a stomach virus when the baby was 2 weeks old.

I only let my niece and nephew visit, but even then... they were not allowed to get too close or to touch.

Same for me. The only kids that have been around DD are other babies that are not yet in daycare.

WWYD - allowing toddler visitor
I wouldn't do it - everyone's sick lately and no one seems to stay home when they are sick anymore and just spread germs.... my brother went to his friends house with is 10 week old DD. they called ahead and asked if anyone was sick, they said no. They get there and one kids nose is running like crazy. their response was "it's a little cold." now my niece is sick!

DS is 2 weeks old and has already seen his cousins (2.5 & 1) twice. The 2.5yr old has held him a few times too. Neither of the boys goes to daycare or anywhere else for that matter.
