Peanut allergy?

I have been trying to get DS to try peanut butter for the longest time to r/o an allergy. Ive put it on crackers and stuff and he would never even try it or put it by his mouth. Today he was asking for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (he heard about it on TV). I put a tiny amount of peanut butter and lots of jelly. He started eating it and said he didnt like the bread and pulled it apart and started eating the jelly part. He told me that side (pointing to the peanut butter side) made him feel sick. When I asked further he said it made his belly hurt. I took the whole thing away and made him a fresh jelly sandwich with just jelly.

So is this a possible peanut allergy? Neither DH or I have food allergies, BUT I have heard something about a correlation between food allergies and reactive airway+GERD which DS had and we didn't. Maybe he just doesn't like the taste? I know I will have to get him tested to find out, but has anyone had this reaction to peanut butter and it turned out to be an allergy or not be an allergy?

I'm thinking that maybe he just didn't like it... I don't think an allergy would make his belly hurt that quickly.

Did he have any other reactions to it? Hives? redness around mouth or neck? These are the reactions my son had when he had peanut butter for the first time and he does have a peanut allergy. He never complained about his stomach hurting. I would try giving it to him again if you want to rule out an allergy. He might just not like the taste of it. You can always take him to an allergist to have him tested if he doesn't want to eat it.

I think I want to get him tested. His cheeks got a little red.

It doesn't sound like an allergic reaction, but kids don't always know how to describe how they feel.. so him saying it made his belly hurt could mean that it did cause some sort of reaction in him. I'd have him tested before giving him PB/nuts again.

It definitely can be an allergic reaction! My stomach instantly hurts if I eat almonds...like horrible pain.

It may not be at all, but I would get it checked asap. Just in case. Allergies come in all different forms...some people get hives, some have their throats close, some have terrible intestinal cramps/diarrhea/vomiting (not necessarily all 3 at once). It can manifest in so many different ways and a subsequent reaction can be way worse.
My son had hives on his chin, that was all. But he has a peanut allergy..that happened at 18 months and we've avoided peanuts since, no other reactions thank god.

How old is he? Some children have a natural aversion to foods they are allergic to. They push the food away. It's a survival mechanism that happens with some food allergies. It's fascinating to me. The day my son was diagnosed with an egg allergy he had been playing with it but would not eat it. Some kids won't even touch the food.
