Holding off on the rice cereal?
DD will be 4 months next week and I am thinking the Ped may give the green light to start rice cereal soon. However I may hold off till 6 months bc I read that their digestive tracts are not fully sealed and mature until 6 months…is this true?
Also DD isn't holding her neck up that well just yet, she is getting better but her head is still wobbly. I am working on this with tummy time and bumbo time - neither which she loves.
And lastly I have heard the rice cereal can be binding and also that it is more just practice for when you start fruits and purees, etc???
She is EBF and STTN - not sure if that matters but just giving all the deets so I can get some input. TIA!

Re: Holding off on the rice cereal?
My Ped gave me the red light at 4 months but told me to hold off until 6 months if I can or until she shows interest ~ My DD started showing interest after the 6 months. I skipped the rice and went to oatmeal, fruits, vegy's.

DD is ebf and I followed the AAP recommendation to wait until 6 months even though her ped suggested starting at 4. We started with oatmeal at 6 months and then went right into fruits and veggies.

My peds did not recommend any cereal due to the arsenic levels in rice. Hr started her on veggies at 5 months. And now at 7 months she has fruits and veggies. Never had cereal. Its up to you but do some research and discuss with your ped. Do what you feel comfortable.

Re: Holding off on the rice cereal?
I'd wait until she's interested in food. Waiting means that her head control will be better, she won't push the food out with her tongue, and she'll be able to sit on her own (or be close to it). That's more important than an arbitrary date, kwim?
Some babies find rice to be binding. There's no need to start with it, and some peds will recommend starting with oatmeal or skipping it altogether. Most say to start with cereals b/c there's a minimal chance of an allergy, but the "stage 1" fruits and veggies are just as safe. It's all for fun anyway; the bulk of her nutrition should come from bm or formula for the first year.

Same here. Except with my first, who had a major drop on the weight curve at 4 months, so our ped suggested starting cereal then, which we did. Held off on fruits and veggies till 6 months.
