age for swimming lessons
What's a good age to start swimming lessons? I mean, when can they actually learn how to swim, not just be in the water with mom? My DS will be 2 in May and I'm not sure if he needs swimming lessons before the summer?
We don't have a pool and don't really know anyone with a pool. So the only water he would be in would be at the beach, and I don't think he'd really be swimming there yet, probably just wading.
Should I just wait til next year for lessons?

My cousin's FH is a swim instructor, and he said kids get it at 2 - that is when they can coordinate their movements enough to learn to kick and move. HTH!

Re: age for swimming lessons
I agree that they get it around two... I unfortunately waited until my son was a little over three. He HATED it and would throw up when we got there... For DD, we're starting her next week at 17 months. I don't expect her to get anything out of it, but I want her to be used to the idea by the time she's two when she will really understand how to swim. Postponing swimming until after 3 was my biggest regret with DS.

Re: age for swimming lessons
I started my dd at 26 months but se had major separation anxiety and cried the entire class. After 5 times I took her out. She wasn't getting anything out of it and it was heart breaking to see her scream for my husband and I. We now do mommy and me swimming at YMCA and she loves it. She is 30 months and she can swim a little on her own. Goes under water, blows bubbles. After this session is finished I'm going to try individual lessons again.

We started DS with real lessons at three. He's had five lessons and he has really improved. We are doing it as a joint beginner class/mommy and me with our 10 month old.
Eta it depends on the kid, our friends dds are really into it but DS is clingy but I follow the lesson with him.

Re: age for swimming lessons
At 2 DD didn't really learn anything. It did help her become comfortable in the pool but she wasn't really learning to swim. It seemed to be playtime for her in the pool. By 3 she definitely started to learn to swim.

Re: age for swimming lessons
I started DS at 15 months, at 3 1/2 he was swimming independently under water without any flotation device. We have a pool so it wasn't an option that he didn't learn how to swim as early as possible. DD is 17 months and I'm ready to sign her up, but she is still taking 2 naps so once she drops her morning nap I'll get her into class. My au pair brings her to the pool now and she loves it so I'm sure she will do great. It's really never to early to start, no matter how often you plan to be around the water.
